Confirmed with Link: Nemec going, going, gone…to Calgary (for two future firsts and a second rounder)

  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
I'm sure he will be a better player in Calgary, he's young and has plenty of opportunity to improve. He may even be a 9M player some day, but he's nowhere close right now and unfortunately right now is what we need.
AND right now we can't afford to pay him $9m.

Or even $6m given what he contributed last year.

Again, I’ll reiterate. This team has stunk for several years, years in which Nemec was part of that group. I have a hard time feeling any which way about any of these players getting moved. You’d need to provide me with some overwhelming evidence that shows we are a worse team without him.

Based on strictly last year? We are a better team without him.

The year before even moreso.

Everyone wants this new GM to make some moves, he does and everyone is pissed? More moves are coming, I doubt we are using all those picks in the draft.
Why do people do this? Who is "pissed?"

You don't have to be either 100% positive or pissed.

I got a new vehicle a few years ago, still miss the physical buttons of my old one and get a little annoyed not having them. I wouldn't trade back, but acknowledging simple issues or shortcomings doesn't make me "pissed."

I mean multiple things can be true. I was a bit disappointed in the return initially because I think a lot of us thought we could get a roster player back immediately, but I fully support Sunny trading him and ultimately those picks can be flipped for that roster player we all covet.

I want a GM willing to take smart risks. We won’t know how smart this one was until we see what happens with these picks. For the time being I’m going to trust Sunny until he gives me a reason not to.

Debating Hamilton was better then Nemec this year is just wrong There isnt a single metric where the opposite is close to true. And to add to this, it was Dougie's worst year maybe in his career and he still outplayed him by alot

People want to compete now, and they also want to trade the only D who played well last season. It will be a miracle if Nemec ever reaches Dougie's game last year. But Dougie's worst is still 5x what Nemec can do.

Also regarding the PP time, you want to know why Nemec gets ZERO PP Time !?? Because he just isnt very good at it - not in the NHL.

Hamilton was our best dman this year.

He played our hardest minutes, was our best PP dman, even contributed on the PK, and had the best on ice results. Him taking on tough minutes (and the PK) and succeeding again was very encouraging to me. We had had him on more normal minutes for a few years but old boys still got it

And truthfully if he's playing more defensive minutes, the foot speed is less of an issue.

Yes he'll get burned from time to time. No he won't have offensive numbers you expect for $9mil. But if he can give us high end on-ice numbers while playing difficult minutes, that's a key player.

C'mon now - "everyone"???

Been a bit of a mixed reaction, but generally positive with a tone of "let's see what he does next with these picks" from what I gathered on this board.
I'm a bit upset that we couldn't get a top 6 F in a deal involving Nemec. There must not have been a lot of teams out there that valued him highly as a right shot D. I think Sunny got decent value, but now we still need to swing another deal or two to start improving this roster. I figured we would get a guy like Kyrou for Nemec plus, but not to be.

Getting all the PP time. Even strength he had 25 points which is all of 1 more than Nemec 24 ev strength.

Paired with the actual best defensive defenseman in the league the year before.

I would debate that Hamilton was much better than Nemec this year, and I doubt he'll be better next. His contract is already an albatross.
If you think Hamilton v Nemec is even a debate then you're telling us a whole lot more about your understanding of the game than you think.

The main risk with Dougie is his age. At this stage, being good the year prior is not really predictive of how good he’ll be moving forward. He could fall off a cliff at any moment.

Still, i think there’s a better chance Dougie remains a better player than Nemec for the remainder of his contract than Nemec becoming better than Dougie during that time. And if those picks land us a solid roster player for several years past that, then I think we got what we wanted out of the trade.

Incredibly polarizing player. He has skills but lacks effort in the defensive zone. I think he has skills to put up 30/40 points but not sure about his ability to ever be more than just an offensive guy.

That’s the worst for me. In the O zone he flies around but defensively he’s just caught flat footed and not moving around, losing his man, not retrieving the puck.

Two 1sts and the 35th pick? I am very happy with that return.

I was high on Nemec, but he isn’t going to live up to that #2 pick with that stagnant D play unfortunately. Sunny sold him at the right time. Shame on Fitz for the public criticism of Nemec and the contract implications.

It depends on how you want to evaluate it.

Calgary is instantly going to play him on top pairing (probably number 1 minutes), and if they give him PP1 his points are going to shoot up and so is his ice time. By that metric alone regardless of how he improves or how he actually plays you'll be able to call him a top pairing dman and say you won the deal after about 2 months worth of the season.

In terms of actually leading to winning hockey or being effective, that's trickier. He was great with Ruff, and decidedly not great with Green or Keefe.

I don't think he's a particularly good PPQB. I don't think him being on your PP1 will change it from the 15% or so bad unit it was before, which is how I evaluate guys impacts on PPs. I think he's JAG there. He'll collect points but he won't make a power play better.

His defense has been a struggle to say the least, but he certainly can drive play offensively when he's on and can create for himself. Always willing to shoot and get involved.

Actually evaluating him is gonna be a pain. If he continues to be a 46% xGoals share guy, or drops to a 42-44% or so guy, but in 23 minutes a night in calgary instead of 19 minutes a night in NJD the last 2 years, and is the QB on a 15% power play, is that suddenly a big win? I'm reluctant to give credit to guys who simply exist and eat minutes on bad teams personally. I'm probably going to be called a hater if/when this exact thing happens and I point out his results haven't actually improved, he's just gotten more ice time and PP time, but anyways.

I think it's gonna be a long while until we can actually really evaluate nemec, whether its by how much calgary gets when they do move onto him, or how he plays when they're actually in the playoff mix again.

I'm prepared for nothing in nemecs results to meaningfully change (or for them to get worse), but him to be getting 23 minutes a night and PP1 time leading a bad unit and so the narrative will be he's suddenly broken out.

his defensive failures will now conveniently be blamed on being on a bad team

tales as old as time
