Confirmed with Link: Nemec going, going, gone…to Calgary (for two future firsts and a second rounder)

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
I'm sure he will be a better player in Calgary, he's young and has plenty of opportunity to improve. He may even be a 9M player some day, but he's nowhere close right now and unfortunately right now is what we need.
AND right now we can't afford to pay him $9m.

Or even $6m given what he contributed last year.

Again, I’ll reiterate. This team has stunk for several years, years in which Nemec was part of that group. I have a hard time feeling any which way about any of these players getting moved. You’d need to provide me with some overwhelming evidence that shows we are a worse team without him.

Based on strictly last year? We are a better team without him.

The year before even moreso.

Everyone wants this new GM to make some moves, he does and everyone is pissed? More moves are coming, I doubt we are using all those picks in the draft.
Why do people do this? Who is "pissed?"

You don't have to be either 100% positive or pissed.

I got a new vehicle a few years ago, still miss the physical buttons of my old one and get a little annoyed not having them. I wouldn't trade back, but acknowledging simple issues or shortcomings doesn't make me "pissed."

I mean multiple things can be true. I was a bit disappointed in the return initially because I think a lot of us thought we could get a roster player back immediately, but I fully support Sunny trading him and ultimately those picks can be flipped for that roster player we all covet.

I want a GM willing to take smart risks. We won’t know how smart this one was until we see what happens with these picks. For the time being I’m going to trust Sunny until he gives me a reason not to.

C'mon now - "everyone"???

Been a bit of a mixed reaction, but generally positive with a tone of "let's see what he does next with these picks" from what I gathered on this board.

Debating Hamilton was better then Nemec this year is just wrong There isnt a single metric where the opposite is close to true. And to add to this, it was Dougie's worst year maybe in his career and he still outplayed him by alot

People want to compete now, and they also want to trade the only D who played well last season. It will be a miracle if Nemec ever reaches Dougie's game last year. But Dougie's worst is still 5x what Nemec can do.

Also regarding the PP time, you want to know why Nemec gets ZERO PP Time !?? Because he just isnt very good at it - not in the NHL.

Hamilton was our best dman this year.

He played our hardest minutes, was our best PP dman, even contributed on the PK, and had the best on ice results. Him taking on tough minutes (and the PK) and succeeding again was very encouraging to me. We had had him on more normal minutes for a few years but old boys still got it

And truthfully if he's playing more defensive minutes, the foot speed is less of an issue.

Yes he'll get burned from time to time. No he won't have offensive numbers you expect for $9mil. But if he can give us high end on-ice numbers while playing difficult minutes, that's a key player.

I'm a bit upset that we couldn't get a top 6 F in a deal involving Nemec. There must not have been a lot of teams out there that valued him highly as a right shot D. I think Sunny got decent value, but now we still need to swing another deal or two to start improving this roster. I figured we would get a guy like Kyrou for Nemec plus, but not to be.

Getting all the PP time. Even strength he had 25 points which is all of 1 more than Nemec 24 ev strength.

Paired with the actual best defensive defenseman in the league the year before.

I would debate that Hamilton was much better than Nemec this year, and I doubt he'll be better next. His contract is already an albatross.
If you think Hamilton v Nemec is even a debate then you're telling us a whole lot more about your understanding of the game than you think.

The main risk with Dougie is his age. At this stage, being good the year prior is not really predictive of how good he’ll be moving forward. He could fall off a cliff at any moment.

Still, i think there’s a better chance Dougie remains a better player than Nemec for the remainder of his contract than Nemec becoming better than Dougie during that time. And if those picks land us a solid roster player for several years past that, then I think we got what we wanted out of the trade.
