We also talk about him in like every game thread since he's doing great stuff pretty much every game right now. Sometimes that's just easier than commenting in a dedicated thread. And as mentioned we've seen it before, and we're justified in being skeptical on whether or not he can keep it up. We need this dude both all season and in the playoffs, not just for him to be a Fall wonder.

Just watch this and notice the things they are pointing out.

Maybe he really has put it all together this year. We're not exactly talking about a kid on a heater, we're talking about a guy making good plays, and especially in the highlights for the Caps game, is now a player that is exploiting a defense overcommitting to defend him, knowing he's going to open up a wide open shooting lane for a defenseman and the likes of Gost and Orlov are feasting on it.

It’s a really small observation. But Necas’s skating has been elite for awhile. It was always his stick handling that couldn’t keep up with his speed on the ice. This year I think his hands have finally caught up. He’s not coughing up the puck nearly as much as he used to.

I think part of the reason why is he is changing pace in his skating at the right time and not trying to force something that isn't there, which leads to him losing the puck less. Not just straight out speed trying to beat guys, adding more east/west, curling back to wait for others to catch up, etc...

Well, we've seen Necas get hot for stretches before, so while we are all very happy to see him playing like this to begin the season, we're also waiting for the fall back down to Earth.

I mean if he keeps this up all season, I could definitely see the Canes looking to extend him. Our problem with him has never been that we didn't recognize his talent, its that we've been frustrated that his play has been so inconsistent over the course of a season, and when things start to sputter for him, he tends to spiral by trying to do too much to overcome the struggles. If he truly does show his development has taken him past that point, I have no doubt in the world we'll look to extend him for max years at a competitive rate.
Yeah but I don't think he wants to extend here

I'm not so sure about that.

Watching this interview,

You can tell that something for him changed with the World Championship gold. Winning in front of his home crowd, being a part of that moment and the celebration, he keeps coming back to it. Being on a winning team, and being a contributing piece to that winning organization clearly means a lot to him. I'm not so sure there are too many other teams in this league that would be able to bring him in without sacrificing something and still remain a top contender like we have been and continue to be.

And we're also a lot happier with his play. Rod has talked this year about how he's taking good risks these days and not dangerous pointless risks, he's scoring, he's making the players around him better. Ultimately, the reason there was an impasse was that Necas had an idea of what kind of player he was that wasn't being matched by what he did on the ice. Now that he's playing like the guy he thought he could be, he's getting the assignments he wanted, he's getting the icetime he wanted.

A lot of the tension in a relationship goes away when you genuinely resolve the underlying problem. If Necas has really turned the corner, and it's feeling more and more like he genuinely has, then the underlying issues are no longer there and it's easy enough to repair the frayed feelings.

Ah, we are such bad fans. Good thing someone will take the team from us at some point…

Again, back in October, you predicted that Necas would be the first big trade of the season. now you are acting like "we' never have nice things.

I for one appreciate that we are cautiously appreciating what appears to be a proper breakout for a guy we’ve all been patiently holding out hope for instead of jumping the shark and obnoxiously running to the main boards and starting x amount of threads about how he’s better than this guy and that guy. We’re not even at American Thanksgiving so let’s just enjoy it at the moment without getting ahead of ourselves.

He's having one of the absolute best stretches of offensive hockey in Hurricanes history (I don't want to get into raw numbers vs eye test vs pace vs etc). It reminds me of E. Staal coming out of the 04-05 lockout where it felt like something special could happen every time he got the puck. Eric was hovering around 120-130 point pace for much of the first half of the season before falling off a bit. I still want to see him keep it up for the entire season and into the postseason but it's been a hell of a ride so far. And it is crazy that instead of Cory Stillman and Erik Cole, he's got Koko and Robinson riding shotgun for so much of this.
