No that’s not my point.

Is Shattenkirk, DeAngelo and Pionk a good enough core of RHD at the NHL level; especially if Shattenkirk can’t play on the first pair? Do the Rangers need to find a 1RHD, and if so, whom of those three players should be moved.

No not in my mind. No real shutdown guy for 1, and two... Sample size on Pionk is small but the other two make a lot of defensive mistakes.

Would be wise to use their pick on an RD like Noah Dobson (assuming they don't win the lottery to get shindigs like Tkachuk).

Can we change the title for this to just a player discussion ? Every time I see the recalled/assigned it makes me think he got sent down. Wouldn't put it past our front office lol

It’s not a well balanced right side at all. We are selling off veterans. But supposedly the plan is to keep Shatty. He should be moved at the draft.

It all depends on where they pick. I think there is a pretty obvious top 6 picks at the stage. After that it’s a little more muddled.

I'm assuming the Rangers stay around #9, give or take a couple places, which is where they are in points per game right now. It would take a pretty sweet lottery ball to get into the top-6.

The Rangers are going to take a hit when Grabner and Nash and whoever else gets moved. Yeah they might get Kreider and a couple other guys back but Grabner and Nash are all situations players. Kreider and Buch aren't....and they'll be coming off layoffs and Kreider's has been a long one. So I'm figuring around 7--give or take a spot--but not 9 not unless we lost a couple spots through the lottery. As well there's coming a point where playing Henrik every night will be just idiotic. Do we absolutely mathematically have to be eliminated before AV and his staff get there?--I don't know.....but leaving Henrik in to be shelled night after night would be just plain stupid. There's a point of also finding out more of what we have in Georgiev--so........

Why do we need the right side to be balanced? Just use the left side to balance it if you must? Pionk looks very solid defensively and Shattenkirk is fine defensively.

I would be, my second overall.

I don't feel he's better than Svechnikov or Zadina. I think part of his ranking is his name. Not that he shouldn't be a top 10 pick, but no 2? Ehhh. No.

If he has a strong finish, I could see him go 4th though.

Folks, let's save the political debates for the politics threads.

If you see something you think is offensive, you can always report it to the mods.

I like Tkachuk quite a lot. The Rangers IMO could use a lot more edge and to find a very skilled player that could provide some of that in a proactive way would be a good thing for us. Just saying. If we're sitting on the 6--7-8 pick you have to consider him if he's still there. On the wing with Chytil as his center--giving Filip a physical force that he can work and grow with. That could be a good combination.

I think Pionk's done well.

He was better the first few games than recent games, but he's been exposed in a role he shouldn't be playing in as a rookie, and probably ever won't be good enough for.

He's done better than Gilmour and Sproul who I don't think are NHL'ers. When everyone's healthy, I might prefer him having a spot in the lineup over DeAngelo.

Generally I agree. Pionk's responded the best. After the first 2-3 games though it's become more of a struggle for all of them. Part of that might be because Skjei and Holden--the two vets haven't been steady enough. Chasing games is hard for young defensemen and even Skjei is pretty young. They take more chances and they get burned more.

As for Gilmour and Sproul---it's not really that they've been bad---the group is very raw and inexperienced and they've been thrown into the deep end---there's no real defensive anchor right now. IMO the forwards were backchecking mf'ers against Calgary and Winnipeg and we really got outplayed in those games too but there was at least a semblance of defensive cohesion.. That's kind of disappeared. They haven't help out the D nearly as much since then. And in the end that turns into Henrik's problem.

Seriously unless we get a great offer for McDonagh I wouldn't move him. He can still be part of turning this team around even if it's two-three years down the road. Of course he'd have to be re-signed then.

What is it that you don't like about ADA?

I think it's too soon to get a great read on Pionk, Gilmour or even ADA. Maybe Skjei too even though he has played in way more NHL games..

Looks to me like ADA has potential to be a top 4. Gilmour surprised me more but he looks pretty decent too. Pionk makes good reads. None of them look like to be either super star or slugs.

On a rebuilding team I'd like to see all of them back and if they end up playing behind Shattenkirk, Staal with Skjei thrown in there, they have time to let it work itself out.

Get a coach who will try to mold them, see what happens, would be my plan.

If any of them seem like a lock for next year it's DeAngelo. Saying that I think Tony needs to be cognizant of his defensive responsibilities and I think he plays best when he plays gritty. Taking on Simmonds yesterday might not be the wisest of moves but he will get respect from his teammates for that and the league will wake up to him more too if he continues to stick up for himself. It's kind of a Mathieu Schneider thing and Schneider turned into a very good player.

Pionk I think will have a good shot. Gilmour and Sproul probably not. The Rangers are going to need some veteran guys and more size and strength on their D one way or the other. They could use more edge as well.
