Pionk has been much better defensively than offensively. I don't know what people are watching. He has some points, but his defensive play looks better than his offensive play.

This is pretty much true.

The opponents have taken like 10,000 shots when he's on the ice, but I don't think the Rangers have taken any.

I think Pionk's numbers will improve quite a bit when his usage is corrected. That said, I don't think he's anything like Stralman. They're 2 totally different players.

Yeah, this will be an interesting one to follow! But it could take a while before his usage changes. Maybe. Who is AV going to be using against the top lines on the other team? Won’t be TDA. He didn’t like Shatty in that role, has that changed? If the idea is to trade Shatty eventually, you don’t want him in an in over your head role. Maybe AV is fired in a couple of weeks.

That is the problem with trying to solely judge him by the metrics. The lack of offense he's bringing. That means that only offensive defensemen would look good utilizing advanced metrics. The more defensive ones look poor. The kid is not an offensive defenseman. So what? By and large, he has looked just fine.

Speaking of looking, what was the last top defenseman that has looked good in this vaunted system?

Kevin Klein. ;)

Seriously though, I could be mistaken but I think that unit — was it Nash-Step-Miller/Fast-McD-Klein — is the only unit able to take this assignment under AVs usage and not have bad CF%, even have good CF.

Kevin Hayes CF went from 49-51% getting the easier minutes to 43% when he got AVs tough assignment.

Ryan McDonaghs CF% went up 7% over night after getting traded to Tampa, basically from 46% to 53%. And that is 53% playing mostly with Girardi! ;) It’s a small sample size, but away from Girardi in NY McD getting AVs toughest minutes his CF was 46% and away from Girardi in Tampa it’s 59.5%, ie almost and 13% gain over night...

John Gilmour’s CF is good getting the easiest minutes. If he substituted with Pionk — would we play better?

Pionk is at 41.5% playing 25 minutes a night on a tanking team in a shutdown role. 5’11 rookie. Let’s hope for the best!

I think the posts in this thread on metrics mostly are very level headed and informative. Let’s see where it goes. Nobody is claiming that Pionk sucks or is a bust (based solely on metrics at least), but with his current usage his pair is getting hammered. It’s interesting follow this going forward. It’s also interesting to follow since AV — if he stays here... — have one D pairing/unit that he really is consistent with giving very tough minutes too. And one line/D pair he gives very easy minutes too. What shall be attributed to that, ie the usage, and what to the individual? It’s interesting and valuable to try to sort out — but of course very hard to do so.

I don't know how to even check on how a unit of 5 would have done, but It depends on when you are looking at the numbers. AV's first season Boyle-Moore-Dorsett got even "tougher" usage and were putting up 52 CF% and 64% xG. Only 140 mins at 5v5 together though. Also, I don't ever recall Nash-Stepan-Fast/Miller being a line together...

Actually, Nash-Stepan-Fast were, they played 53 mins 5v5 together. 44% CF, 41% xG. Not so good.

I am getting senile, was it Kreider-Step-Nash during the Cup run? Meant Steps line during the Cup run.

Having a four line team was good times. Hoping we can get that going again as soon as next year. The Boyle and Prust days were nice as well as the Boyle-Moore-Dorsett period. Those guys aren't necessarily all that hard to find and/or acquire, we just seemed to not care to do it this year. Well, that and AV has horrendous taste in fourth liners.

Is Ellis really even that good? I know he's having a breakout season this year on the best team in league, but I've always viewed him as someone who's never really delivered on expectations. He had a whopping 17 points in his first 2 seasons (64 games) and just 27 the year after (when he was the same age as Pionk). Granted I haven't watched a ton of him as I don't catch a lot of Western conf. games, but I absolutely don't see why it's unreasonable to compare Pionk to him. Stature wise, Pionk's actually got 2 inches and 10 lbs on him already and will probably fill out some more

I'm not sure I'd call this a breakout year for Ellis, unless you're referring to PPG. He's been solid for years.

I think I agree - Prust was really an awesome player for us for a brief period. Not a top talent obviously but worked hard and was really a pain to play against.
Alas.....Not an AV type. Neither was Boyle. Not saying that Prust was worth his contract, but he would not have lasted long with AV anyway.
