Some good games/upsets brewing tonight

I was out yesterday so I didn’t really catch much of the afternoon/day games sans the Penn State one. I was flipping around the watching the night games though.

I see Texas A&M lost again. If you go by recruiting rankings only Alabama, Georgia, & Ohio State have more talented rosters than them.

That’s a dumb move. These firings seem a bit rash. Chryst, is a born and raised Madison guy. He has made chicken salad out of chicken **** for years at UW. Not a glam guy but above board and loyal. I guess that that doesn’t matter these days.

I think it’s partially about keeping Jim Leonhard in the fold. They’ve held on him for longer than they could have hoped at DC but it might have been getting to the point where he may have made the jump elsewhere.

They’re paying Chryst over $16M to go away which is surprising because Wisconsin is notoriously frugal when it comes to its football spending.

I guess keeping Leonard is important. It’s bad form to let Chryst go mid season like this. Not the UW style. Granted Chryst’s offense has been bad this season. Probably due mostly to Mertz’s poor play. However Leonard’s defense has been pretty bad as well.

Leonard better be good. Chryst had a 67-26 overall record; 43-18 in the B1G; 6-1 in bowl games and won the B1G West in ‘16, ‘17 and ‘19. He recruited well in an area that was not the most appealing to H.S. Stars. For that he gets canned mid season.
The rumor is that he didn’t care for NIL. That turned off some of his players and potential recruits.

I think a lot of the teams in the Big Ten not named Ohio State aren’t really too crazy about NIL when it comes to recruits. I think the mindset is more so we’re gonna take care of the guys on our roster actually making a contribution before they do recruits. It’s not wrong in spirit but that’s obviously not how the others at the top are using it.

I could see arguments for both sides of the coin. It certainly could be a careful what you wish for scenario but at the same perhaps they just felt maxed out with Chryst. He’s not really a big recruiter & his offense is pretty old.

The program is seeming to be trending down but I guess they wanted to rip the bandaid off now instead of giving Chryst the season after. Jim Leonard seems to have factored into things as well. He seems to be getting a trial run for the job.

Chryst agreed to a reduced buyout it’s around $11M from that original $16M.
