Other Sports: NCAA Thread v12

I guess the thing would be going forward with Campbell & Iowa State would be expansion might seriously devalue them financially down the line if expansion heads to two super conferences. I’d imagine that’s a current P5 program that wouldn’t be a take for either the Big Ten or SEC.

Iowa State was paying Campbell $4M as of last year. They may have bumped it to stay somewhat in line with all the head coaching contracts this past off-season. Maybe a he could get $8-10M a year from Nebraska but you’re on the clock right away for those first 2-3 years. If you bring Iowa State results there you’re not making it past that time.

Fitzgerald is around the same numbers. So these programs are essentially meeting the market price yearly pay out in half but offering Nick Saban like job security. Northwestern is obviously safe with a spot in the Big Ten so they should be able to continue meeting those prices as they inflate. But will Iowa State? Probably not if they get left out.

Iowa State right or wrong was a trendy off-season playoff dark horse last year & they ended up going 7-6 with no sweat off his back.

That type of low pressure might just be appealing to him. As long as keeps Iowa State in the bowl picture that’s enough to keep his stock as a head coach up there & nationally.

I’m not saying he’s bad coach or anything but he’s in that Pat Fitzgerald & David Shaw realm where they’re playing with house money given the program they’re at. Perception wise right or wrong all the good is on them & all the bad is on the caliber of program they’re at.
Get to know Matt Campbell. He wants to get into the spotlight. ISU is just a stepping stone to a major job. Might have nailed the USC job last year until Riley stepped up. He’ll be a serious contender for the ND or Michigan job if they open up. Very well respected in the Midwest. Can’t see him taking a side ways step to Nebraska.

He probably could have had the Florida job years ago. He’s had NFL interest too. So if he was all about the spotlight he would have jumped on those things.

I’m not saying he’ll be at Iowa State forever but he’s obviously been in no rush to leave all these years. To some degree he’s likely valued the low pressure/high job security there to this point.

Campbell has had chances to jump and hasn't so far.

Bruce Feldman and Stu Mandel mentioned Lance Leipold (ties to Nebraska) and Chris Klieman also.

I think Lance Leipold would be a good low key hire for them. I think that could potentially get them into that Wisconsin/Iowa realm of being a higher floor team most years. That might not be a sexy enough hire for them though.

Frost probably recruited as well as you could at Nebraska in the early going when he still had some juice in perception. But to me it’s not like Nebraska has a high recruiting ceiling even if done right. Leipold probably wouldn’t be a great recruiter but you might get better results on the field.

what do the numbers next to each game represent?

It's a confidence score sorta thing. 1-10. If you guess the win right, you get awarded that number of points. If you get it wrong, you lose that number of points.

You can fully YOLO it and guess 10 for everything, but if you botch the week or a lot of teams botch their week, you could go negative on points. Or you could guess 1 for everything out of safety, get everything right, and only get a tiny number of points.
