Baby steps or do you want to go back to Burmeister

Wells might be worse than Burmeister. Probably is. It has since come out that a lot of the stuff that drove me nuts about him was the OC micromanaging too much. He was being ordered what to do on option plays regardless of what the actual read should have been. I don't think that fixes his inability to throw, but Wells is pretty bad on that front so far. I do think this offensive design is far better from what I've seen and that's boosts Wells. Drop him into last year's offense and he's probably at least as bad as BB.

Fuente probably shouldn't get another HC gig at a real program until he's done penance relearning the job elsewhere.

I think Nebraska is just gonna have to follow a Wisconsin/Iowa type of model in the sense of becoming a development program given the recruiting disadvantages. But like a lot of administrations/fan bases/boosters/etc. around the country is probably too delusional to accept that.
Some of these schools need to face facts and realize that they will never be able to compete for championships in the NIL era. The question then becomes should they down grade their program to a different level or even give up the sport?

I’m not sure it reflects well that VT has a quarterback transfer from Marshall and the offense looks like trash, meanwhile Marshall just beat Notre Dame

I think it reflects accurately on the state of the program after Fuente. Which is somewhere between "rubble" and "shambles."

Incidentally, the mindset among most Hokie fans (especially the older set) is perfect for turning them into a development program. Those people aren't shrieking for the moon, they just want a competent product that is enjoyable to watch. I know I'd accept it. Anyone who is reasonable about the challenges of recruiting to Blacksburg would accept it.

I don’t know. It’s the same three teams at the top dominating recruiting as it was before NIL with Alabama, Georgia, & Ohio State. Texas A&M is really the only school that has bought themselves into the conversation recently via NIL. As we saw last night with them you also need good coaching which the other three schools have on top of their talent advantages.

I think Nebraska is one of the bigger losers in today’s recruiting landscape. They recruited nationally back in the 90’s under Osborne. That was their way of mitigating the fact that the state of Nebraska then & now doesn’t produce a whole lot of good P5 level prospects. The region beyond Texas isn’t that great especially. The competition for Texas recruits just isn’t the Texas schools anymore either. Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, etc. are coming in there to recruit & pulling good prospects from the state of Texas.

Every school that has any recruiting pull now a days recruits nationally. Even SEC schools in the most prospect rich region of the country still go north & west for top prospects.

Nebraska fans think Matt Campbell is beneath them.

Campbell’s turned down better jobs in college & the NFL than Nebraska. He’s made Iowa State pay with all that interest but I guess he might like the low expectations there.

Who knows if it’s true or not but it’s been rumored he’d be interested in the big northern schools if they were to open for whatever reason (Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, & Penn State).

I would imagine Campbell, like Fickell, is waiting to see what shakes out with the Ryan Day NFL talks. He hasn't been openly critical of it, but he's said enough to suggest that he's not all that thrilled with the current recruiting/NIL landscape, and he could make the jump if someone comes calling.

Penn State would be another option if Franklin gets canned, but honestly, there's not much separating Penn State from Iowa State/Cincy anymore, aside from a facilities bump. All three are in that next tier of schools hoping for a playoff appearance, but a highly unlikely contender in the grand scheme of things.

The teams capable of getting into the mix with the big four (USC, Texas, Texas A&M, LSU, Florida, and Oklahoma) either just got their guy, or they're locked into someone that they can't get out of (lol, Jimbo and Kelly).

Iowa State right or wrong was a trendy off-season playoff dark horse last year & they ended up going 7-6 with no sweat off his back.

That type of low pressure might just be appealing to him. As long as keeps Iowa State in the bowl picture that’s enough to keep his stock as a head coach up there & nationally.

I’m not saying he’s bad coach or anything but he’s in that Pat Fitzgerald & David Shaw realm where they’re playing with house money given the program they’re at. Perception wise right or wrong all the good is on them & all the bad is on the caliber of program they’re at.
