Though football sometimes entertains me, things like this are why I don't truly take it seriously as a sport. The rules are literally arbitrary in every single game. Penalties are never even close to consistent--the adage about "holding could be called on every play."
And also ball spotting pisses me off. Point of the game is to advance the ball down field. On 99% of plays, officials just kinda guess and throw it wherever, sometimes entire feet further or shorter than it should have been. On the other 1%, they spend 17 minutes rewatching every frame of every angle with a microscope (and still get it wrong half the time). That 4th and inches you're splitting hairs to figure out may have been averted entirely if the ball had been correctly spotted after 1st down!
I maintain that officials, penalties, and reviews should be abolished and after every play they should just flip a coin to determine if it counted.
