Other Sports: NCAA Thread v12

Meh, it's a moot point with the Elko hire, but recruiters recruit. Kids aren't that different in various parts of the country. It's the parents that show more variance.

Stoops already has to recruit basically nationally (with specific focus on the SE and mid-west) because Kentucky has very few in-state or even regional options to pursue every cycle. By Kentucky standards, he's been a pretty good recruiter and developer of next level talent.

Not just parents, coaches matter too. Those relationships matter, and I think that's where guys can suffer when they move around and wander into an area where they're an outsider on that front.

The transfer stuff should mitigate that a lot though

That's fair. Building an in-state network of high school coaches that are closely linked to the in-state schools can create feeder mentality (there's a reason the Kirby-copter goes all over the state to drop in on coaching staffs). But, Sark hasn't had much issue and he's from CA. Jimbo was a gulf coast guy and his teams underwhelmed at everything but recruiting.

I'm not even certain that Stoops would have done a good job at A&M. I am certain that A&M fans are out of their minds if they think he was beneath that job. It's just not that attractive a job outside of the booster money. Unreasonable expectations given the history of the program, weird campus culture, etc.

Every down year they have has the result of turning their fanbase a bit more delusional. Not desperate, not impatient, just at war with the way things are.

A&M’s big time recruiter under Jimbo was their current interim HC Elijah Robinson. He’s a Philly/South Jersey guy who played at Penn State. He got his start with Rhule Temple & followed him to Baylor before A&M plucked him off them. He’s gotten them top kids from his wheelhouse in Philly/SJ but he’s also gotten top kids from areas he’s had no previous ties to before there because the guy is just one of the top recruiters in the game.

The top 25 or so programs are recruiting much more nationally than they ever did before so I think ties are becoming less important because of that.

I think ties are more important in the sense the coach may be more inclined to stay at your school for a longer period of time however that maybe now a days. Teams also have so many off the field recruiting staffs now too that play a huge part in the recruiting landscape. The whole recruiting landscape is honestly moving so fast these days a lot of traditional things or conventional wisdom are applying less & less.

I’ve always wondered what separates a poor recruiter from a great recruiter. Any articles that go in depth? I’ve always pictured a great recruiter to be some slick, polished Joel Osteen type for some reason

HOLY SHIT COULD THEY ACTUALLY FIX IT?!

Hopefully.

It’s frustrating because Friday night they made some serious adjustments in their scheme to play more in space & what do you know they put up almost 600 yards. Like yeah it’s Michigan State & they’re average at best but you willingly played in a phone booth against the Delaware & UMass’ of the world. Obviously they fed Singleton & Allen the ball a lot both in the run & pass but they also dipped more into their bench with some of the best athletes on the team for some situational sparks to the offense.

They actually gave Allar a lot of help this past week & he ended up with 93 grade from PFF which I believe is his highest of the year.

The QB transfer market is starting take place Will Howard (Kansas State) & Tyler Van Dyke (Miami) entered both should draw considerable interest amongst P5 teams needing a QB.

Fran could be a superstar in the coaching ranks, but this feels like a reach at this point of his career. He's got exactly one year of experience as a co-DC. Otherwise, he's been a position coach under Rhule and Kirby. I did think either he or Tray Scott were the internal choices to bump to co-DC with Muschamp should Schumann get a head coaching gig somewhere.

Seems strange to put the New Jersey qualifier in there when neither school in the tweet is associated with New Jersey.

I guess to give some type of rational with him being from the northeast region of the country as to why it might be a good personal fit. Most of the kids on Syracuse’s roster are gonna be from NY, NJ, PA, etc.

So vetting in this case means they’d like to know how pissed people are going to be.

@JojoTheWhale some of the inside poster(s) on Penn State’s 247 forum hinted at it this morning. It seems like Kansas OC Andy Kotelnicki is either the guy or at least one of the finalists at this point.

I'm stunned. Every name I've heard would be a good hire. Kotelnicki is a fantastic choice. That's legitimately encouraging for once.

KJ Jefferson (Arkansas) & Grayson McCall (Coastal Carolina) entered today.

There’s smoke around Riley Leonard (Duke) & Notre Dame potentially. He hasn’t entered the portal yet though.

I can't decide where I hope Jefferson goes, but I do want it to be somewhere fun. He's talented.

McCall feels like a possible Penix replacement?

Yeah it should be interesting, just out of the grad transfer window that’s four interesting names that have entered. You have Kurt Warner’s son at Temple in there too that looks to have some intrigue as a potential P5 move up player.

In terms of creating more parity at least at the P5 level most of the bigger resource programs appear to have their QB situations in place for next year. So some mid-level P5 teams could be benefactors here in the QB transfer market.

Edit: Riley Leonard is in the the portal now too but it sounds like it’s pretty much a done deal to Notre Dame.
