As much as it has turned into playoffs or bust, I don't wonder what some of these obviously non-medical opt-outs are thinking. The bowl experience for theses teams can be a once in a lifetime moment.
I get day 1 and 2 guys opting out. Go get your money and works towards that second contract. Not worth the risk of injury to put one more game of tape out there, especially when the league already thinks so highly of you.Penn State has now had 6 opt outs.
- WR Jahan Dotson
- DE Arnold Ebikete
- S Jaquan Brisker
- LB Brandon Smith
- LB Ellis Brooks
- DT Derrick Tangelo
The last two are probably Day 3 guys at best, could go undrafted. The first four are probably Day 1-2 guys.
Arkansas best two draft eligible players opted out too. So if you’re a draft guy no point in really watching this one.

Day 3/UDFA guys are the complete opposite, imo. Best case scenario, you elevate your status by putting in a quality performance. Worst case scenario, you get injured (as small a chance as that is), you come back with the extra year of eligibility, sign an NIL with someone, and work towards improving your stock. I tend to lean towards grades being an issue with some of these guys where they checked out in the classroom assuming it was their last semester in college and they were going pro.
No I will not be watching the VT game or answering any questions
I think bowl games are pretty much going to the way of the dodo bird at this rate. Covid probably expedited things. The more they expand the playoffs it’s just going to water it down even more (which I expect to happen).
I get the feeling that Oregon has seen is best days. SC, under Riley is going to be a problem for the Ducks on the field and off. The days of raiding SoCal are over. No more going up against weak kneed Helton any longer.Sco Ducks.
I'd be good with eliminating bowls and turning them into playoff games, but bowl games are still a pretty damn cool experience for the players involved, most of which will never play in a greater setting. First class vacation, playing in a new venue, bowl game swag, etc.
It's still a pretty stellar deal, and opt outs still represent the minority of players. If you're at a mid level P5 or any G5 program, it's probably the highlight of your college career.

If this results in eliminating like 1/4 to 1/3 of Bowl Games permanently nothing of value will be lost.
I think once we get an expanded playoff there is going to be a lot more of opting out. Why bother with a bowl when you're not one of 12 teams going to play in any of those 11 total playoff games(bowls)
I have a very good friend that played at Maryland and they made the Independence Bowl one of his years there. The players really enjoy it. After the regular season grind starting in August having a week out of town on a 'work' vacation is a reward for the overwhelming majority of players who have no professional future ahead of them.I'd be good with eliminating bowls and turning them into playoff games, but bowl games are still a pretty damn cool experience for the players involved, most of which will never play in a greater setting.
