Nashville Predators Talk - 2024/2025 Season II

100% agreed. Most posters here lambasted me for saying that at the time. But here we are. :(
Wasn't the timing being questionable generally the consensus around here? I don't remember there being that much support for it other than speculation it may have been needed for buy-in from the potential UFAs.

It so needlessly accelerated the Askarov issue though. Complete unforced error.

What's crazy about it is it appears Trotz honestly thought Askarov was going to be happy to sit around as a back up until he hit UFA which is just mind blowing.

I HATE Brunette!!

Starts the game with 81, 91 and 9 as a line. Why are we still trying to win games and not putting the youth with vets to see what they've got? Vange has 11 pts in his last 12 games after being moved up, why not do this with Svechkov and Wood?

ZLH got moved up and then Forsberg was playing with everyone last night.

Then, we pull the goalie and run the vets out there. They know how to play in this situation. You don't gain anything long term by putting them out there. Put Svechkov, Vange, ZLH and Wood out there and see what they can do. At the very least, it gives them experience.

The season is lost, get something good out of it by putting kids in situations they'll be in coming down the pike in the future.

I'll ask you, why do you think that was?
I am unsure. I think he handled the puck better, was dangerous offensively all game long and hard on pucks. Maybe the pace of play suited him better as it was a bit slower-pace? But I don't think that's it, we've played some slow teams lately as well.

Much like Vange, who has looked better recently, he got time with vets and his skill set complemented theirs. It's amazing what happens when you put kids, who you hope to be top 6 forwards, with vets, who are top talents, they produce like top 6 forwards.

With this thinking, we've got Vange with ROR and Bunting. We've got ZLH with Stamkos and March. My suggestion, put Wood with Svechkov and Forsberg and see what happens. You find out if the kid has something or not because if he gets a puck to either one of these guys in a good scoring position, they just might score. Same thing if they get him the puck, he might score. The problem is, Wood gets Smith the puck and the offensive dreams have died there. Same thing with McCarron.

I want to see our talented kids with talented vets, it's the only way we find out what we have in the kids and from that, it may be the way to salvage this team for next year.

That's why Brunette is frustrating, he's making decisions like he thinks a win matters. This time of year and in this situation is when you give your young guys chances to do things you might not normally do at the beginning of the season.

See who can PK, take your Vets and split them with the young guys on the PP and give both groups a shot, put them on faceoffs against good players, put them in when the goalie is pulled at the end of the game, and for the love of God put them with decent players.

We know what everyone else is going to do at this point, getting Smith and McCarron more minutes doesn't do a dang thing because you should be hoping someone comes along that is better than them and pushes them out of the lineup unless you are an idiot.

Yeh the extra time to the Smith, McCarron types instead of investing more TOI on up and coming players is one of the more maddening things to me.

Smith & McCarron arent terrible but theyre infinitely replaceable 4th line players. So why are we elevating them to near 2nd line player minutes? Winning does move us up in the standings and losing doesn't move us down. Doing this kind of nonsense with the roster is why I hate Brunettes coaching. Old players over young no matter the quality.

Poile and Hynes are gone but the universe screamed be careful what you ask for, you just might get it with Trotz and Bruno. I honestly don't see what Trotz's vision is going forward. July 1st made it look like he was running a mix of younger guys with potential with a crew of 40 goal scoring vets up front with a capable vet for the second pairing .... then moved out the younger guys and now we're running a crew of waiver wire retreads and the college signing 1st rounder is playing the 4th line. Then there is Bruno who decides what his top line is during the summer .... loves Big Sexy and Smith so he won't keep them in their rightful role ... and can't figure out how to play anyone under the age of 27 in a spot where they can succeed.

I don't see Trotz moving on from Bruno and I doubt ownership fires Trotz so this fall we probably endure the blundering duo yet again.

Id prefer for our organization to never have that guy on payroll. Skinner for Saros makes the most sense to me. 1 for 1.
Doesn't work for them capwise. They have around 13 million in projected cap space next season with 19 signed and needing to extend Bouchard. Going from skinner to saros would take up around 5 million of that space. Bouchard will take up the rest. They would need to be cap in cap out if they took saros so they can fill out the rest of the roster.

Yeah, at this point if they need to include Evander Kane to make it work, we should just take it. Maybe Kane plays, maybe he doesn't and LTIRetires, I don't really care. The goal is to avoid the next 8 years of Saros' deal, and if the only team willing to help us out of that jam requires us to pay Kane $4M next season, then that's a small enough price to pay.

Mind you, Kane has a NMC that doesn't expire until the exact moment that Saros' NMC kicks in. I can't think of any reason he wouldn't want to waive it to get out of Edmonton and come to a lower tax situation.

Anyway, this is all still moot... Trotz is not even going to remotely consider trying to "save face" on his Saros contract. It's going to be just like everything else. He'll keep rolling Saros out there forever. Year 8 of that deal, he'll still be saying "ok, the first 7 were a struggle, we got some bad luck along the way, but THIS is the year Saros gets back to Vezina form, book it!"

I know everyone keeps coming up with these type of trades but what makes anyone think that GMBT is gonna trade Saros? He "GMBT" traded away our supposed future goalie to keep him and then signed him to a long term contract. I don't think Saros is going anywhere. Neither is Bruno. GMBT thinks he has made the BEST moves ever and will continue down this path with the same type of players. So the current players had better play better. I think GMBT thinks he is Billy Beane and creating the Moneyball team.

I mean just look at how well most of his contract extensions have turned out from last year. Most have been traded haha.

I think they're pretty clearly being rewarded with more ice time for their hard work.

At this level everyone wants to play as much as possible. No matter how hard you work, how many times you stand up for your teammates or how many pucks you block, it's a goal scoring contest in the end. They know it. Perhaps the better earning players pay the restaurant bills more often, but another way to reward these guys is giving them ice time when it doesn't matter anymore.

But they have been getting too much ice time all season! Those guys should be on the ice 10-12 minutes tops. If they PK then their 5 on 5 time needs to be 8 minutes or less, imho. Offense dies on their sticks. They have to know deep down that they are bit players and don't deserve what they have been getting.

I'm not even sold it will last that long. First time one of them makes a turnover all of them will get demoted.
Yes if you are one of the younger not "STAR" players. How many times have we seen Josi, FF9, Schenn or Marchy give up the puck, make a bad pass in own zone that leads to a score and nothing. But if a younger player does it...
