A brutally disappointing season has left Nashville in an awkward spot at this deadline. This is not a rebuild — at least not yet — so GM Barry Trotz isn’t conducting a fire sale of veterans after already moving out rental Gustav Nyquist. The Predators are listening on center Ryan O’Reilly but need to get a promising young player back in return in order to be compelled to pull the trigger on a reliable veteran with term. Trotz is more than happy to keep him. It sounds like nothing has advanced beyond tire-kicking on the former Conn Smythe Trophy winner as a result.

This is the right answer. There is no point in dumping Oreilly short of an insane return including an NHL ready player.

We have no choice but to try to regroup over the summer. I just hope Trotz finally admits Bruno is the problem

The problem is Bruno is only half the problem.

The other problem is our core is too old for today's NHL. We don't have a single player under 25 who is a consistent contributor up front or on the blue line. You simply can't compete in the NHL without that.

I would argue the team is going to get a lot better in a different system and a different coach, but then we are back to what we've been complaining about for years: mid. Especially if Josi isn't the same player he was before.

There might be one or two glitches in the system. :laugh:

That said, a guy can have the ability to skate really well - like Stamkos undeniably does - but if he still doesn't really use it that often or well, there can still be an overall "pace of game" issue, regardless of his underlying physical skill.

They do not. Only top speed, which is only based on a single measurement. So maybe Stamkos got a boost somewhere and hit a higher top speed that McDavid once this season. This is why I cannot rail against top speed enough. The real speed metric is 20+ bursts.

in 20+ bursts, McDavid is nearly triple Stamkos with 290 vs 102

Frankly I wish they would leave top speed off or bury it at the bottom because it's the top listed stat and the default that people look at when they're not familiar with EDGE.

Great catch. Data without context is useless as seen here. Fully agree with you that it should be buried.

while Stamkos may have topped out at a marginally higher in top speed, McDavid is hitting +20 burst at almost 4 times the rate.

My only point was calling Stamkos slow, isn't correct. He's still a better skater than most on our team.

I don't think so, but it does measure burst, and burst frequency, which is what I posted above.

Problem 1 (Bruno) furthers problem 2 (lack of young talent). If the coach doesnt let young forwards get top 6 time, you arent going to get consistent contributions. Giving novak and Evangelista 10 mins a night with Jankowski on the 3rd line isnt going to create massive contributions from them. Same with tomasino on the 4th with McCarron and smith. I think L'Heureux got more of a shot in the top 6 than Tomasino did

There are plenty points why you sell orielly now. It's definitely a sellers market right now so there isn't a doubt in my mind that trading orielly will bring back something that will help us in the future. And that's something that us fans are gonna have to face. This team isn't getting any better. Do I think this assembled team is a bottom 3 team? No. And i do believe that alot of our woes are solely based on our coach and his system. But I also don't see a contender. We are a much older team that will continue to get slower. We might make a jump next year if we change coaches but I see at best this team as a bubble team who barely misses the playoffs or gets beat in the first round. A common theme and a mid range 1st Selling orielly makes you weaker but it also helps with a rebuild. Next year's draft is supposed to be alot better and truly has alot of potential stars so if you can get a 26 1st and a prospect say like Casey from new jersey you take it and run. You build for the future not present. You can build around a Misa and a McKenna but keeping the oriellys you are not helping your future just delaying the inevitable that this team will have to rebuild sooner or later
