I wonder if Pens plan to retain on Schenn and deal him to Toronto or somewhere before deadline? He would likely have decent value retained.

Maybe Trotz thinks we can sell Bunting next deadline for big return? Maybe he just wants to clear out salary and feels that he is setting up cap better going forward? Maybe he was concerned we will miss out on Miss so he wants to make us worse?

It's nuts. Bunting is a little bit of an agitator and scrappier, though. Maybe they're overall pretty close, although I'd argue since Bunting is older, more expensive, and his production has come with higher icetime and much better linemates that Novak is the slightly more valuable asset?
If Trotz really wanted the slightly older/grittier forward, the swap should have just been Bunting+pick for Novak. Then we should have been able to get something on top of that for Schenn in a separate trade. It'll be really interesting to see what Pittsburgh flips him for... they'll get another pick for him for sure.

Absolutely bizarre. I assume Pitt will retain on Schenn for a solid return. Honestly, glad to see him gone but expected more back.
Barry acquiring a 30 year old is insane. Why would we want Bunting? Unless he is also getting flipped, just the exact type of asset (old, signed through next year, not good) that we should not be targeting.

Maybe teams are actually wise to how bad Schenn is now and his value with that contract is actually negative. I doubt it, but it would make more sense that way

To be fair, one of them did not belong in the lineup. The team is better off now and far better off for the future giving Schenn's ice time to someone younger.
Trotz is by far the worst gm in the league. He barely saved any cap and actually got older at forward. This dude is horrible and has no idea what he's doing as a gm.
