I think too many people are jaded by the idea of having elite scoring defensemen. I personally think they're over rated, unless they score their points with a nasty shot from the blueline or because they're very good PP tactician.

Sure, having a Makar is nice but without a Toews they can be a detriment.

I'd rather have one Hedman and five Fabbro's. Than one Josi or Karlson and five Carriers trying to be like them.

People are spoiled having had Ekholm here as a #3 for so long. That guy was a #1 Dman so if that is what you are expecting to see out of a #3 or 4 you are going to be disappointed for a long time. Our Dcorp for years has essentially been Crosby+Malkin combo but just on the defensive side. It's an exception and not rule.

Besides I wouldn't know enough about most teams #3 or 4 to know if Stastney is better than those guys or not.

#3 and 4 are generally not dynamic players. They are good Dmen that can eat up minutes and bring a little something to the table.

It's a hard thing to follow, so I'm typing slowly. In this game, you win by scoring more goals than the other team. :sarcasm:

You do that by (1) scoring goals and (2) stopping the other guys from scoring goals. (Crazy as that is.)

So, yeah. Having guys like Fabbro, who are really good at stopping the other team from scoring are important and should be valued. Valued far more than a guy who is a really nifty skater but doesn't know how to read plays, leverage angles, where to put his stick, shies away from contact, doesn't know how to tie up sticks in front of the net, etc.—but what a nifty wrist shot!

Look at the Blackhawks. Seabrook and Campbell, right? Really good solid defensemen that scored points but nothing crazy, won a few cups. Penguins? What, Letang and a supporting cast? The only other team to win multiple cups recently is Tampa, right? So, Hedman and a supporting cast.

It’s not so much about needing all offensive guys, it’s that in building a defensive corps if you have multiple guys 6’1” or bigger who can battle and skate and transition, you can build a first rate defense without a bunch of stars. It makes you tough to play against. That is way most of top teams are built.

Skej is actually pretty ideal 2nd pairing guy, except that our system is weird and he has struggled getting comfortable. Our rhd though are basically a disaster, either too small, too slow, or clueless. He wasn’t a star, but giving away fabbro was insanely stupid.

I'll give you the Pens, but Hawks had Keith, Seabrook, Campbell and Hjalmarsson which is a very good d-core. Tampa had Serga, McDonagh, Cernak, prime-Schenn and Bogosian, which is a very strong defense group.

Right, but how many are or were considered "elite" players and going to the HHoF especially as an "offensive defenseman"?

That's basically what I'm saying, I'm just not as focused on the difference between 6'1" and 5'11". Yes, you need a mix of size, and everyone knows what I think of Blankenburg, but a strong on his skates guy that can win board battles isn’t a non-NHL player or bottom pairing guy just because he's 6'0".

On tinder 6'0 and above is the standard. Maybe we need to enforce that on our hockey team 🤣

My definition of a defenseman is "DEFENSEman" which in my old fashioned way of thinking is the guy responsible to try and stop the other team from scoring. I recognize the need for them to move the puck, and at times to carry the puck, but we have too many goals scored on us as the result of the confusion it causes for our forwards when they make irresponsible decisions. BTW I would definitely like to see our defense consist of some larger individuals that can skate and push people around.

This is worth a listen. I don't think either of these folks read HF. Plenty of people had questions about the off-season moves.

And finally they are coming to the conclusion that the roster doesn't match the coaching style. Who could've guessed.

Coaching system is supposed to be one that requires speed and constant pressure but this coach is also preferentially playing the old players and relegating the younger faster players to the 3rd/4th line and not elevating them to prominent roles. The coach himself doesnt seem understand how to use this team. He keeps falling into put all the old players together in the top 6, have a 4th line of mindless muscle, and put young players on the 3rd line and sometimes put an old chaperone with them for reasons

I think every team needs a couple of McCarrons. Solid 4th line guys, physical, playoff ready depth. The problem is we have like 6 of em, signed them to multi year contracts, and refuse to scratch any of them to let our young guys get minutes
The funny part of it is we had a very successful 4th line of Smith, McCarron and Sherwood in the playoffs. All they had to do was not sign Janko but sign Sherwood. And they couldn't even get that right. Sherwood is what stirred the drink on that line and it isn't a surprise he has a great season in Vancouver.

Or trade Sissons and keep Janko if you have to. But you didn't keep the one guy you should've. Or trade Sissons and dont sign Janko.

This team.

So I went back in time and dug this port up from the free agent thread this summer

"Yeah I mean look I was team tear it down and rebuild through the draft. And while I still think that is the right direction for this team to win a cup and have a long window to do it, clearly Trotz and Brunnette disagree with my assessment and think this team can win.

At the end of the day, Preds are my #1 team and I'm always going to stand by them, but what I couldn't condone is the mushy middle. Either go in or get out. Today they went in.

The cup window is now 3-4 years. Let's hope they do it. I certainly do.

I still have concerns about the blueline, I don't think we are strong enough on the right side and not sure I LOVE the Carrier deal (would've preferred Adam Boqvist or Jani Hakanpaa) but it's not the worst.

What I would like to see now is Tomasino/Glass packaged for a d man or to clear cap space to bring in one more d man.

I still think there is a chance Fabbro is traded as well.

But overall how could you not be excited? How could you not hope this gamble pays off? Trotz did a masterful job today in actually opening a cup window for the Preds in the next three years.

That window only gets bigger next year with Joey's contract coming off the books and Nyquist, Fabbro and Glass all coming off the books. That lets you really go big game hunting for a forward or D."

Oh you sweet, dumb. Dumb idiot. They went all in all right. All in the toilet. This team ain't winning a cup in 3-4 years. Maybe not even in 10.

Que up the Hinostroza tribute video.
It's pretty minor in the grand scheme of things but I feel like how we dealt with Hinistroza is just emblematic of how braindead our team is. It should have been obvious to anyone that he wasn't doing anything for us in the NHL and we should send him back down before he needed to clear waivers again. Instead we keep him in the NHL just long enough that he has to clear again and sure enough he gets claimed. So now our farm team is worse all so we could provide no benefit to our floundering NHL team.

While I was never thrilled with the contract Trotz handed Saros, I convinced myself that signing those old dudes for all that term and money would propel this team into fighting for the playoffs. It didn't take long for me to be shown how wrong I was.
