I think too many people are jaded by the idea of having elite scoring defensemen. I personally think they're over rated, unless they score their points with a nasty shot from the blueline or because they're very good PP tactician.

Sure, having a Makar is nice but without a Toews they can be a detriment.

I'd rather have one Hedman and five Fabbro's. Than one Josi or Karlson and five Carriers trying to be like them.

People are spoiled having had Ekholm here as a #3 for so long. That guy was a #1 Dman so if that is what you are expecting to see out of a #3 or 4 you are going to be disappointed for a long time. Our Dcorp for years has essentially been Crosby+Malkin combo but just on the defensive side. It's an exception and not rule.

Besides I wouldn't know enough about most teams #3 or 4 to know if Stastney is better than those guys or not.

#3 and 4 are generally not dynamic players. They are good Dmen that can eat up minutes and bring a little something to the table.

It's a hard thing to follow, so I'm typing slowly. In this game, you win by scoring more goals than the other team. :sarcasm:

You do that by (1) scoring goals and (2) stopping the other guys from scoring goals. (Crazy as that is.)

So, yeah. Having guys like Fabbro, who are really good at stopping the other team from scoring are important and should be valued. Valued far more than a guy who is a really nifty skater but doesn't know how to read plays, leverage angles, where to put his stick, shies away from contact, doesn't know how to tie up sticks in front of the net, etc.—but what a nifty wrist shot!

Look at the Blackhawks. Seabrook and Campbell, right? Really good solid defensemen that scored points but nothing crazy, won a few cups. Penguins? What, Letang and a supporting cast? The only other team to win multiple cups recently is Tampa, right? So, Hedman and a supporting cast.

It’s not so much about needing all offensive guys, it’s that in building a defensive corps if you have multiple guys 6’1” or bigger who can battle and skate and transition, you can build a first rate defense without a bunch of stars. It makes you tough to play against. That is way most of top teams are built.

Skej is actually pretty ideal 2nd pairing guy, except that our system is weird and he has struggled getting comfortable. Our rhd though are basically a disaster, either too small, too slow, or clueless. He wasn’t a star, but giving away fabbro was insanely stupid.

I'll give you the Pens, but Hawks had Keith, Seabrook, Campbell and Hjalmarsson which is a very good d-core. Tampa had Serga, McDonagh, Cernak, prime-Schenn and Bogosian, which is a very strong defense group.
