A couple of updates today:

So we’re just gonna ice a 21 man roster to start the season? Or guess we could still keep Del Gaizo up after waiving him.
Kind of glad they cancelled that preseason game. Im surprised they even rescheduled it in the first place really.

Maybe they’ll claim a 22nd player? There are a few almost-decent tweeners on waivers. Heck, Fagemo, Foudy, and Anderson-Dolan are back on! :naughty:

But seriously, I would be tempted to grab Bussi. The way Wedgewood is playing… I mean, I don’t have any firsthand knowledge of Bussi, but he has been talked up for a while as a backup candidate for Boston. If he turns out to be worse than Wedgewood we could just dump him back on waivers. But I’m definitely worried about Wedgewood at the moment.

Sure hope del Gaizo makes it through waivers
I think he will. There are several more experienced or higher profile D on waivers today. :dunno:

Wonder if it was that they didn’t like the Skjei-Josi pairing or if they just really didn’t trust a Schein-Fabbro pairing. My guess is the latter and we still in reality see a good bit of Skjei-Josi together.

Dunno Fabbro looked pretty good in preseason and seemed to be doing the things Brunette had harped on him for not doing. I'd say its more likely Carrier may not be up to par after the injury last season so they want to shelter him a bit. Could also be them trying to create more of a shut down pairing with Schenn.

Not thrilled with Schenn on that pairing, but truth is they may not be either.

Those are the worst goddamn pairings I’ve ever seen
You just need to go back to those first couple of seasons if you want to see worse.

Sure hope del Gaizo makes it through waivers
He should, most of the guys getting picked up seem to be guys that had pretty good camps and uh, he didn't so much.

Josi / Fabbro?? I like spreading the talent up and down the pairings, but I dunno about Fabbro on the top pairing. Did they play together last year?

I can't imagine they start the season with only 6 defenders on the roster. You never know if someone will tweak something or get hit in the face with a puck during warmups. While highly unlikely, you should always have a spare d and f on the roster.

Disagree. Fabbro was Josi's best partner.
Schenn is not good but the other 5 are fine.

I have just been assuming they were going to barge ahead with Skjei-Josi as the top pair, but I actually prefer the listed lineup. Josi-Fabbro is perfect IMO. It helps balance things out, and Josi and Fabbro were fantastic together in the past, they should never have been split up.

I don't know who shelters Schenn best, it probably is better that he has Skjei to protect against his issues than Lauzon?

So to me, the defense pairs listed are about the best of all worlds.

Just, of course we can't actually carry only 6D, not when Schenn is one, and Carrier has his injury history. I am expecting we are going to quickly have an answer for a 7th D. Either Stastney is coming back, or they'll immediately recall somebody (Del Gaizo himself or Blankenburg or somebody else from Milwaukee) or... they're claiming somebody on waivers. As soon as the Cap deadline passes and before Thursday's game they could do a recall. Waiving Del Gaizo now could have been strategic to increase the odds of him clearing, given the other higher profile names on waivers today. That way, he's "pre-cleared" if they choose to send him down in a little while if Stastney comes back.

On waivers atm, there are a variety of options with NHL experience, although I'm not entirely convinced there's good reason to claim one of them vs. promoting from within. We can't afford larger contracts so it wouldn't be Holl or anybody of that ilk, but there's also: Josh Mahura, Tyler Tucker, Samuel Bolduc, Sebastian Aho, Nick DeSimone, Isaak Phillips, Josh Brown, Erik Brannstrom... I guess it's not impossible the pro scouting dept thinks there is a serviceable #7 available on waivers. We'll find out later this afternoon. :dunno:
