I was considered a Debbie Downer at the time when I insisted on how stupid that whole thing was. Same as John Scott.
The guy who started it definitely had an axe to grind with Fitzpatrick. He was a Sabres fan IIRC.

But the campaign morphed into one of those weird viral moments when we started to collectively realize the power of freeping the All Star fan poll - let's face it, they kind of deserved it and the ASG is no one's favorite event over the age of 10. And then it started metastasizing into a satire of the ridiculous political attack ads that were so prevalent in the '06 midterms and also spurred some pretty good debate about what was wrong with the ASG in general.

Peter Schaefer, the man with the most ****ed up curve on his stick I can remember.

It's not even that he was that obscure a player the first time around. It was that absolutely bizarre stint at the end of his career where he came back from disappearing in Europe to play like 15 games or whatever, after we'd brought him in as a "camp body" to satisfy that "NHL vets" rule. Then he somehow actually made the team out of camp. One of the weirder "homecoming-ish" stories.

Victor Oreskovich

Oreo is such a good one. Just makes me smile and kinda giggle every time i'm reminded he existed as a Canuck. The absolute scale of the lore around his weighlifting prowess and how good he could be was funny at the time, but it's so much more hilarious looking back now.

Lukas Krajicek.

Not sure i'll ever be able to forget him. He's one of the most memorable "forgettable" players...just for the sheer hype of how good he could be. And the degree of fizzle on that hype.

Mario Bliznak

Mathieu Schneider (best smile the Canucks ever had)

Sergei Shirokov - legend

Don't think i'll soon forget the Mathieu Schneider fiasco. The way that blew up was pretty memorable.

And Shirokov will never be forgotten. One of the all-time Preseason Greats.

My nomination, is Ryan Shannon.

Man i remember being pretty excited about that guy for some reason. He wasn't even like...bad, in my recollection at least. Kinda fun, moderately productive player very briefly. Then he was gone. I legitimately think a player like him would've found a lot more opportunity if he'd come along in today's game. A lot more tolerance for tiny little waterbugs throughout a lineup these days.

Rockin' Ronalds Kenins. Remember the game when he registered 4 hits against Chara alone?

In my memory, Kenins will always have those one or two random absolute Kovalchuk-like snipes. That random stretch where it was like, "wait, this guy can actually score?" And then nothing.

But do you remember when Nikolai Khabibulin punched him in the head after he scored a shootout goal

I honestly did not, even in remembering Shannon in general. But now that you bring it up and i just youtubed it...i do totally remember that incident and him being caught up in some phase of that whole "spin-o-rama gate" when it came to shootouts. When players were constantly trying to cheese the process with silly spin moves and snowing goalies and the whole, "did the puck maintain momentum" rule and all the rest of that goofy nonsense.

Wow, this thread took me down a nostalgia lane i did not expect to go down. Thx for that.

Comox Valley
Jim "The House" Sandlak.

In the 1993-94 season he hit a player into a cameraman. The camera caught the player's face coming straight at the camera and crashing into it. When the dust settled and they showed the player Sandlak hit, he had a crescent-shaped cut around his mouth from hitting the camera.
