A legend of comedy has passed away. Robin Williams dead at 63 years old. Suspected suicide. Apparently those close to him are saying that he has struggled with depression and substance abuse.

That's really sad.

His battles were semi-public, so it's not like one of those completely out of the blue shocks. But still.

This whole Robin Williams thing has me so bummed out. He was my favorite when I was a kid and I wanted to be just like him when I grew up. It's not fair damn it!

theoretically, you could make money buying Bad Rats on sale on Steam this week (.24), playing for the cards, and selling them, but the game is apparently awful, so what's even the point?

If you haven't gotten Franchise Hockey Manager 14 like I still haven't, it's in a bundle for $2.99

I'm trying to to fix up the rosters a bit (aka get rid of the munchkin) but I can't find any way to force trades. The virtual Glen Sather is smarter than the real one apparently since he is turning down the exact trade that actually happened. It bothers me when games like this don't have a force trade option. It has an option or setting for pretty much anything you could possibly think of, but I can't have the option to force a trade if I want to fix rosters?

ticking the commissioner mode box allows you to do sort of whatever.

I've spent likely thousands of hours with the EHM series, so I'm having to learn this new stuff, but somehow FHM came out 6 years after the final EHM installment and it feels more arcane in some ways.

I tried Commissioner mode and it still didn't work. This confirms my "Yzerman is a wizard" beliefs as the St. Louis trade and the Thompson trade won't go through.

pretty sure you can just reassign them to the team you want under the edit tab

I spent some time looking over the ECHL with the 'current' rosters database and that's all jacked up. Even some of the rules are wrong.

Out of the Park Baseball 14 to the first person who fills out the thing.

edit: k, so I've played FHM 14 for more than 6 hours and completed my first season (taking the Solar Bears to game 7 of the ECF, and first place in the east during the regular season). My reasoning for playing OSB first was to really see the guts of the game. They can streamline the NHL experience, but it's in the lower leagues where you see how their game actually works.

The ECHL is decently represented, but EHM 07 had the actual roster rules (for the time) and was more user friendly. The issue holding EHM back was the lack of customization. League rules were hardcoded into the game, in anticipation of future installments (which stopped coming of course). FHM does, to it's credit, allow for more customization, but not necessarily in ways that mirror their real life counterpart.

por example: the ECHL has a veteran rule. EHM would mark each veteran with a 'v'. FHM doesn't have a veteran system as such coded in. The way they worked around that was by requiring each team to have 14 players under the age of 26, which sort of acts as a facsimile to keeping the league appropriately young.

However you could change the age limit to whatever age you desire, or remove it entirely, but having it based on pro games played (and excluding goalies and players sent down) isn't in. None of those are.

I don't think it's just the 1000's of EHM hours, but EHM 07 is still the best hockey sim to ever grace this heavenly marble.

FHM is pretty dece, and an overdue buy for a hockey nerd like myself, but the best thing about FHM is that somebody is making these type of games.

edit 2: yep, looks like the ECHL is busted. There's no logical way the Cincinnati Cyclones would sign Dominic Moore, Shawn Thornton, etc. in what would be this offseason. Anton Stralman went to the Evansville IceMen. Clayton Stoner got the biggest contract so far. $32,000 over 1 to play for the Gwinnett Gladiators.

Maybe there will be a correction at some point of the offseason where they'll lose their dudes, but the ECHL gets too good, and to think I was happy with the roster I put together.

originally posted by Minnesota on the Wild board.
You've probably seen it by now. That thing on the right side of the screen that lists HF articles and HF's Twitter and other thread links. Yes, it's new this morning. Here's our attempt to answer some questions about it:

Why?
This was initiated by Crave (the folks who own Hockey's Future and HFBoards) in an attempt to help drive more traffic to Hockey's Future. We (the mods) were just as surprised to see it this morning as all of you are.

Can I turn it off?
Unfortunately, no. There is no way to disable, shrink, or otherwise alter the side bar. This is the way it will be - for now, at least.

Where/when does it show up?
As far as we can figure out, it only shows up (or primarily shows up) when you're on a specific board, but not when you are viewing a thread. It will not show up when you write a post. It will show up if you try to make a new thread though (it's showing up for me right now as I write this). It also doesn't show up on the main page (www.hfboards.com or hfboards.mandatory.com)

What does it show?
When fully active, it should show:

A list of the most recent articles created on Hockey's Future
The most recent tweets from HF's official Twitter account (mostly links to newly created articles which, yes, seems redundant)
A list of the most recently active discussion threads on HFBoards

I'm not seeing all of that, what gives?
If you use NoScript or a similar script controlling/blocking plugin for your browser, you may not see the article list and Twitter feed (just the latest threads). If that's the case, allow scripts from RSSInclude.com. That will cause the article and twitter content to show. Honestly, that's mildly less jarring than just the thread list.

I hate this, get rid of it!
That's not a question - but yes, we know the immediate reaction has been overwhelmingly negative.

Will there be updates to this thing?
We are hoping something will be done to make the side bar cleaner and more manageable. But that's not up to us (the mods). That's up to site ownership.

Where does the Latest Discussion thread list link to?
We're not positive exactly what does and doesn't get linked to. We know for sure that it should link to all the major Hockey discussion boards (NHL talk, Prospects, Business of Hockey, Fantasy Hockey, etc.). It also for 100% sure links to team board threads, including maybe potentially this one. It could potentially also link to the Page 2 stuff like the Lounge.

Because of the team board links, BE VERY CAREFUL WHEN VISITING LINKS FROM THE SIDEBAR. You might see a thread that looks inflammatory to the Wild and riles you up, but note where the thread is located when you go there. Because if it's on a team board and you respond harshly to the posts you find, you could end up receiving a warning/infraction for trolling even if you had no idea you were on another team board and not the main board.

If you have any other questions, post them here. Comments too. We would appreciate constructive comments beyond "This sucks, I hate it," but it's probably important to note negative feedback, too, just so management sees the full extent of site-user feedback.

WooHoo a new sidebar..:sarcasm:

If the owners want it there we're stuck with it, but they need to make it less....just less.

I hate how bulky and busy it looks. Just needs to be better looking and maybe a bit smaller.
