For those who like jangly 12 string ricks and really great L.A. sound pre 80's "new wave" (Plimsouls with more of an edge and some great old stuff) you might check out the Nolte brothers "The Last".
Their website is laexplosion.com.
Try to rise is a good song all things considered as are many others. L.A. explosion is another good one. Go to the video section and you can watch some underground live vids (low quality but still so great) of the band playing at places like The Starwood and Cathay D Grand, Madam Wongs etc. If only for the old vids it is worthy of a check out.
Not for everyone but I get nostalgic for that type of music often.
If you want to see a great hispanic L.A. band look up "The Plugz". They were called "punk" at the time which of course they weren't. They were just really great and unique.
If you like Rock a Billy The Kingbeez were L.A.'s premier band for a number of years.
For Punk Red Kross and Wasted Youth were great bands among so very many. I would visit my mom during summers and spend every night at Oki Dogs and whatever venue had live music. So many great bands, too many to list and so many great characters.
The Dickies "walk like an egg" and "you drive me ape you big gorilla" are great songs for their time in their own right but they always put a smile on my face. R.I.P Chuck Waggon. Life was good and the accident wasn't your fault but you will always be remembered as a madman.
For acoustic great music now I listen to a bunch of "The Mountain Goats". So many great songs its hard to single any of them out. Some of "The New Amsterdam's" is very very good.
On the other hand if you haven't heard the godfather of dark genre horror style rock "Rocky Erickson" then you haven't heard anything yet. "Bloody Hammer", "Stand, for the fire demon", "Creature, with the Atomic Brain" and "When you have Ghosts" are all written after he had fried his brain and while he was in a mental hospital (actually very true) and for very early 70's music stood alone in their genius. Youtube has a bunch of the songs with him playing live but they are mostly acoustic and the songs are much better imo when they are played with the whole band. Electrified and LOUD.
That's a bunch of "musical" babbling on my part. I love pretty much everything and have a huge range of tastes but I got to feeling nostalgic a bit and thought I would share. Pretty pathetic.
