How many of you knew that "I Love Rock N' Roll" by Joan Jett was a cover song? I didn't until yesterday when I stumbled upon it. The song was written by New Yorker Alan Merrill in 1975 when he led a band called, "The Arrows".
It didn't chart at the time but became a hit for Joan Jett in 1982. It made him a lot of money and made him more money when Brittney Spears cut it and made him even more money when Miley Cyrus cut it.
He has a good sense of humour and perspective about how a song he wrote and performed never achieved anything but it later made him a ton of money with other people singing it.
Here's the original version and then a video of him talking about the song...seems like a pretty cool guy.
The video where he's talking about, "behind he song" is a series and includes many other artists talking about how a song came to be. Some are better than others, but it's definitely worth flipping through.
Here's the link to their series. Don't dismiss the Roxette entry's; it's pretty interesting how that band and songs came to be.
