How many of you knew that "I Love Rock N' Roll" by Joan Jett was a cover song? I didn't until yesterday when I stumbled upon it. The song was written by New Yorker Alan Merrill in 1975 when he led a band called, "The Arrows".

It didn't chart at the time but became a hit for Joan Jett in 1982. It made him a lot of money and made him more money when Brittney Spears cut it and made him even more money when Miley Cyrus cut it.

He has a good sense of humour and perspective about how a song he wrote and performed never achieved anything but it later made him a ton of money with other people singing it.

Here's the original version and then a video of him talking about the song...seems like a pretty cool guy.

The video where he's talking about, "behind he song" is a series and includes many other artists talking about how a song came to be. Some are better than others, but it's definitely worth flipping through.
Here's the link to their series. Don't dismiss the Roxette entry's; it's pretty interesting how that band and songs came to be.

A FASCINATING story that I was completely unaware of! The Rick Derringer connection was particularly interesting to me as I was a huge fan of both Johnny and Edgar Winter. Thank you for sharing this!

Man, I loved Krokus back in 1983 and it carried on for years. Just crazy. Pretty sure my neighbors hated me though. I must have rolled in so many nights at 2-3 in the morning with this cranked and in those days few had central air so windows were all open. Harmon Kardon tape deck, Harmon Kardon amp for the front Boston pair, Blaupunkt amp for the Bose 101s in the rear of my 86 CRX. It was so loud and so clear you could probably hear it all the way from St. Vital to Transcona. I was such a dick. I'd hate younger me now. But there'd be a distinct part that would be so jealous.

Perhaps it was karma that the entire system was stolen. I certainly was never subtle. I wept.

I still do that once in a while in the Camaro with the T-Tops off, put a pretty good system in it too.
