MTS Centre upgrades

When I was a kid you walked backwards down the upper deck stairs like it was a ladder lol

I was always kind of amazed no one died from that upper deck. With the sheet of glass at the end of the stairway I figured if you fell just right you could decapitate yourself on the glass. Those stairs were nasty and in the days of those whiteouts we were usually pretty hammered at the playoff games. Just a complete recipe for disaster.

My grandpa took a nasty spill at the old barn, I think it was the lower section. Big bruises all over his face.

God I wish I was Old enough to attend a game at the old barn. I wish I could have experienced that upper deck.

I was very worried about spilling my beer - as a poor University student, I could only afford seats in the upper deck.

After some Moose games in my late teens we would sneak up to the upper deck and just sit there take it all in now I have season tix in 311 thank you hockey gods!! lol

I saw Metallica there in '04 and we were in the nosebleeds. I was so scared I'd fall down that I didn't stand up for the entire concert.

Couldn't hear anything anyway.

NAILED IT!

As a youngster with his dad and grandpa at a game I was often scared going up those stairs, bloody steep! It's hard to believe you don't hear more stories of people falling. I know my brother fell on one of the escalators to the upper deck one game, got an autographed stick out of it and stitches haha.

Still, if you want a rush and you're in the upper deck at the phone booth close your eyes, turn the corner rush up the steps quickly turn around and look, that'll get the adrenaline pumping!

Anyone know when they are scheduled to finish all the upgrades?

I asked my ST rep when the upgrades would be completed and he told me that last year the paint was still wet for the first pre-season game. This year's renovations are more extensive then last year so I'm guessing they'll kick into 24 hour shifts come September if they have to.

No interest in upgrading right now. I get a good view in 301 (P6), only a slight obstruction in the near corner, and I've never really had a big problem with leaners.

I had the option to upgrade too but alas I couldn't afford it since I was laid off this spring... Ugh just the perfect timing for that to happen.

This was the Winnipeg Arena upper deck as it was being demolished.

That is just plain scary. Exactly why I sat in my seat during the 1st period and never left until the game was over. Two ******* the railing all the way down to my seat. I have terrible fear of heights.

There must have been some building code variance for that! I can't believe that would meet rise/run code.

Lol I was able to pay for my season I have half season and only one seat sorry bro I like going to all my games and not sharing like some people haha.

I worked as an usher in the upper deck for the last Moose game at the old arena. At the end of the game, some drunken nut grabbed one of the heavy concrete and metal garbage cans and hucked it down the stairs of the seating area. It nearly bounced over into the lower bowl. If it had, it would have killed someone. Needless to say, he was tackled by about 5 cops and security guards within seconds. Scary as hell to watch. One of those things that you see happen in real life slow-motion

my greatest memory of the old barn, next to seeing Ducky score in game 3 vs the Oilers in 1989.

we were in the lower bowl. some dude was doing the beer jog up to his seats. had beer in both hands. misstepped. got a golden shower of sorts.

and you guys are all talking about the upper decks. it was the stairs in the north end that scared me. that was like climbing a mountain

I know this is a little off topic but I was looking for something else on kiijiiji a few weeks back and came across STH shares for sale. Singles and pairs. Some were offering signed agreements and share partner benefits.

Back on topic. I agree it was a long walk to the top at the long end of the old arena. Not as steep so it limited the scare factor for me.

I'm gonna go look for that thanks man didn't think anything like that was available. It's crazy how much the safety guidelines change in 10 year hey?

God this is a funny post!!

I remember moving to Winnipeg and being is awe of the old barn. I was lucky enough to sit up in those seats for the last playoff game in 1.0 history. It was my first and last time in those seats and I am so glad I didn't miss out on that experience.

I agree...... I only sat on that high side once.....( I had won 2 free tickets at a Bar for winning a chex hockey tourney ........ Row 52 I think it was(LOL). I got to see the new expansion team Tampa Bay for the 1 st time.
Good Times.

I use to think rexall was really steep it was my first NHL building I ever went to. I went to staples centre after and it was worlds worse. Bell centre has been the steepest so far.
