MTS Centre upgrades

Oh man, bad memories, I had to work there selling popcorn and drinks.

I got to the point I didn't care anymore and I just parked my tray in the corner and waited people to come to me. Imagine some 15 year old kid falling over with a try full of stale Pepsi.

"The magnetometers are mandatory for all National Hockey League games starting in 2015-16 and will remain in use for all non-hockey events," the release said.

"Patrons will use these walk-through magnetometers upon entry, allowing for guests to enter the venue as quickly and efficiently as possible."

Security officers could pat down fans, or use handheld wands in "unique circumstances," the release notes.

Up until now the MTS security have just used pat downs or wands. So will this be another upgrade coming for next season?

I worked as an usher in the upper deck for the last Moose game at the old arena. At the end of the game, some drunken nut grabbed one of the heavy concrete and metal garbage cans and hucked it down the stairs of the seating area. It nearly bounced over into the lower bowl. If it had, it would have killed someone. Needless to say, he was tackled by about 5 cops and security guards within seconds. Scary as hell to watch. One of those things that you see happen in real life slow-motion

What a moron. :shakehead

This is for the Canadian Tire Center in Ottawa. After reading just the first quote it sounded like ALL venues for NHL games had to install magnetometers. Also from that article they are banning re-entry as well. Imagine the outcry if that happened at MTS...

Just to update... It is all:

Per an NHL spokesman, all league arenas currently have some form of wanding and/or walk-through security detection currently in place. There are plans to further enhance security measures for the start of next season, in which all 30 buildings will have walk-through magnetometers.

Sounds like as a result from this dimwit:

A 27-year-old male attending Wednesday’s Game 3 between Tampa Bay and Montreal was arrested for bringing a gun to the game

If TNSE adopts the "no re-entry" policy.... that's going to be huge.

My favorite "security" moment was a couple of seasons ago watching a Jets game on TV and they cut to live video of a group of Bombers players arriving. Clearly timed to show them coming in as the announcers talked about the Bombers players taking in a Jets game...and security orders them to raise their hands for a pat down.

"But we're with the football team..." once of the players began saying as the video cut away. Doh.

I remember that:laugh: "Even the bombers?"

Saw them at the Saddledome last season, although they weren't in use for the Hitmen game I went to. With these in place, I wouldn't think re-entry would be an issue, as it's kind of like an "instant, extremely thorough" pat down, is it not?

One change in security I noticed last year was having RCMP at the bottom of my section before games instead of just venue security. I remember hearing on TSN about players across the league being briefed re. threats, but nothing specific was mentioned beyond that.

It's obvious to me that True north has something special integrated into the scoreboard. Last week a Picture everyday sometimes multiple. One had a caption "we cant show you everything" and now nothing...No updates at all. Seems fishy to me

was it someone on here that mentioned an ice projection system or someone I was talking to elsewhere? No clue how big or recognizable that sort of unit would be.

It's no bigger than a regular projector you see at home.

The only time I remember RCMP at a Jets game last year was at the second playoff game. Possibly because Stephen Harper was there that day...

RCMP - O Canada

OR, perhaps it was because they were making sure my brother or I didn't drop one of these again... :sarcasm::sarcasm::sarcasm:

Our Jets Will Fly -4- Ever

this just makes MTS look old...

If we were honest, we would say MTSC looked 'old' the moment we entered the NHL. Larger cities have much nicer arenas for their hockey teams.

TNSE is spending a lot of money to improve the fan experience, but it will still be 'old' and pale in comparison to many rinks in the league.

It's a great atmosphere, but as rinks go, it isn't really that close to most of the buildings in the league, imo.

So where could a Rogers Place like arena be built in Winnipeg? It needs to happen within 5 years. Too late to put it next to the Convention Centre.

They're building an extension of Polo Park on the lot where the old Bombers stadium used to sit so my vote goes to that huge lot in Seasons of Tuxedo right in front of IKEA on the corner of Kenaston and Sterling Lyon.

With the $400 Million + development that TNSE is doing on Carlton and St.Mary's I would think we aren't getting a new rink for another 30 years. We should be talking about the massive out door jumbotrons people will be watching playoff hockey from in the future "Jet's Square".

If…. and that's a big if…. they ever build another rink I'd bet everything I had on it being downtown.

UGH NO. It's bad enough that the stadium is almost out of everyone's way. Having an arena in an area that's impossible to get to during rush hour is dumb.

They wouldn't be dumping 40M into MTS Centre and 400M on true north square, if it wasn't going to be around another 3 decades or so. Smaller concourses don't hurt the bottom line when you have a 96% and 97% renewal rate. All MTS Centre needs is more club seats, which they are slowly adding. Jets will never rank among the bottom 10 in revenue, even in MTSC.

Always thought that the giant soup kitchen (portage place) would be a great location of the next rink. My guess would be 20-25 years depending on the success of True North square and if the Moose stay in Winnipeg where they could continue to play at the MTSC
