Low risk gamble by both teams that makes sense.

Nashville gets the younger guy with more upside. Good tools. Could blossom being insulated by veterans. Passed up on the Habs depth chart by 4-5 younger guys right now.

Habs get the veteran that could play steadier minutes on a 3rd pair or even 2nd pair in a pinch. Also chip in on the PK since their kids aren't ready for that yet. Having a tough year so far but historically has been a steady player.

Deal makes sense from both sides. But, it's been a while since Nashville developed a top not Dman. See what they can do with Barron, though he seems to have stalled a bit.

Montreal, get someone with more experience and is an NHL Dman. With more kids coming, they needed guys with experience that they can trust to pair with the younger ones. See if Carrier can handle that responsibility.

There was Kovacev... oh wait
Who would have need to be extended to fit the timeline of being a filler RD now, allowing Savard to get moved, and also for a season or two more, without rushing Mailloux or Reinbacher.

Once Savard is rented out I guess Struble will regularly play again.

Instead of gaining a future core piece we thought we got for Lehkonen, the Habs moved Barron for a useful filler piece. Meh.

And for everyone's info, Barron was a fine interviewee in French, so language wise it isn't even a "win".

Straight up not true. But okay, whatever fits your narrative.

I don't know the player. Size is a concern but I like that he's being sold as a non flashy, reliable d-man. Mtl desperately needs veteran stability on the blueline. A guy that keeps things simple in his own zone and makes a good first pass. If this helps reduce Matheson's minutes I'm all for it.

Confirming trading Kovacevic was a mystake
If they'd kept him, Barron would have gotten less icetime, and we wouldn't know what we just gave up, and it wouldn't help insulate Mailloux and Reinbacher next season as Kovasevic wasn't likely to get extended.

This would have allowed Guhle to play on the left side...to assess whether we could trade Matheson.

Matheson- Savard
Guhle- Kovacevic
Hutson- Xhekaj
Struble- Barron

Do you even know what players the Habs got with this? You have a strong opinion for someone who knows so little.
I know they got players and no other teams got this advantage. Nowadays my friend they call that unfair and those cups would have a pretty little asterisk beside them. But I’m not here to debate what French Canadian players the habs got. I could care less. I just giggle when they brag about those cups and continue on about my day. Still more cups than my preds no matter how you slice it so I can’t say a thing in all honesty lol. With 32 teams it’s so much harder these days though ffs

If they would have kept Kovacevic, Barron would have gone on waivers. Although, in hindsight, Kovacevic would have been the best fit, they did obtain assets by trading both him and Barron.

Neither guy was going to be in their long-term plans though

While carrier might turn it around, he's been hot garbage this year. He gets pushed around and turns the puck over with his blind passes alot. I thought signing him was a mistake so at least trotz can admit his mistakes. I could care less about the return I'm just glad he's gone. Only thing I wish different would of been trotz making this deal around a month or so ago so maybe then we don't waive a more capable top 4 defenseman in fabbro. Trotz is not a good gm at all
