There’s now 15 teams left trying to move cap space, and the market has finally been set. Problem is, there’s only a few teams who can take on the salaries.

Imagine trying to move a contract with more than a year left on it? Likely why the Isles deal with Kadri went sideways.

Habs def would have taken Pageau or Beau for less than a 1st, if they could send armia or allen back

Well looks like I will have some crow to eat on Monahan. We will see what the return is but I swore up and down that I didn't think the Flames would need to 'pay' to move him. Giving up a 1st to do so is really awful.

You didn't think the Flames wouldn't have to pay to move off of a $6M contract for someone who had 23 points in 65 games last year and injury concerns?

What?

Just the way she goes. If we have to rebuild in 5 years so be it. Natural cycle of things.

It isn't though. Most teams don't give up 1st round picks to move a bad contract, all so they can add another bad contract. Kadri is a 55-60 pt guy and maybe for only 2-3 more years as most physical type players age badly due to wear and tear.

The simple answer is that Price is LTIR for another year, Byron as well for the 1st half, and that Dach will sign once the season officially starts.

If Dach signs for less than 1.3 Million, could Montreal sign him now, technically burry him in the AHL, and then call him up and be cap compliant once the season starts?
Is he waiver exempt? I'd think he'd get claimed...

I guess they didn't know at the time how things would shake down but especially when you look at how low his buyout was going to be I feel like it's a tough pill to swallow

1st makes sense given how little actual cap space there is leaguewide.

14 teams currently show that they are over the cap (they can mostly scramble to get compliant or have some LTIR, but obviously no space).

6 teams are under the cap by $1.5m or less.

There are still a ton of RFAs that need to be signed, taking a number of the teams off the table.

Why wouldn't it be? Toronto paid a 1st for Marleau and he was owed less real money.

We've seen 2 x 2-3M dumps cost a 2nd and 3rd.

This price makes sense.

Toronto paid a 1st to move basically $6m in dead cap space because Marleau wasn't willing to play anywhere but Toronto or San Jose. Monahan is still a useful but overpaid 2/3C.

Beau? For sure. Pageau? Not a chance in hell. The last thing they need is another long term contract for a player in their 30s. Pageau is WAY better than Monahan, but he also has term.

Yeah like wth. If I'm Calgary and I'm giving up a first to move salary out I'm dumping Lucic 1st no questions asked

Lucic has a no trade clause, he can submit a list of 10 teams he can be traded to. Given that 14 teams are already over the cap ceiling, if Lucic didn't want to move, he wasn't moving. Monahan had a similar NTC, but perhaps he was looking for a change.
