They all got caved. One of the worst D-corps in the league last season. Which is disappointing given the high hopes of the NJD. lol

I think Rempe demoralized them all.
NJD was around league average in terms of chance prevention.

They were putrid. Just admit it. They and goaltending were the reason the Devils went from cup contender to out of the playoffs. Pesce should help though. That was a vital signing. A bonafide 2nd pairing dman.

They were putrid after Travis green took over, yes.

That Siegenthaler Nemec pairing was truly awful.

Hughes needs to learn to play defense before anyone can take him seriously. Nemec also struggled mightily but was rushed to the NHL. When you have those guys who were not ready and shoddy on your defense and poor goaltending, you will miss the playoffs. As is what happened to the lowly NJD.
Yeah both he and Nemec should be in the AHL next year. They were rushed and that could halt their overall development
Nemec and Hughes both had better xGoals share than any MTL dman since their cup run btw.
And both struggled defensively and offensively at 5v5.

Losing sight of the forest for the tree, as usual...

Or cherry picking ?
20 points 5v5 in a season is not a high bar to clear.

Since dach came into the league, it has been done 1102 times. In the last 2 years, it has been done 517 times. That's about 8 guys per team who reach that number every year.

Laine-Dach-Newhook will be a bonafide 2nd line this season. Laine coming into the 2nd line spot will make Dach a better player. Hughes knocked it out of the park with this trade and pilfered a 2nd on top. There was no one else suited to play on the 2nd line with Dach/Newhook. This will help with their development and opens up so many opportunities with Laine down the road. (trade, re-sign etc.)

It really isn't.

Unfortunately, different MTL fans keep having the same misconception about "offseason LTIR" and how it relates to accrued cap space.'

And so I keep having to correct.
You reallllllllly want this trade to be bad for Montreal when in reality there’s no chance it comes back to bite then even with whatever the next cap stat you say is. They will be perfectly fine, got a 2nd for depth D and also received a person with big potential for a bounce back, and if he doesn’t……. They will find a way to be perfectly fine.

Having a player signed at a (UFA) market value contract does not provide positive value yes. It provides net 0 value.

What is genius about having a larger budget than the other bottom feeders?

Presumably those players have to be replaced if MTL is trying to win (playoffs) next year in 25-26
Demidov Mailloux and reinbacher definitely Coem up and maybe even beck. Evans too prob get pushed out as newhook drops to 3C. Also the 4.2 retention don’t get replaced. And Carey on ltir will def have at least 15-19m of space

He IS a big personality, he beats to his own drum, like Kane's influence over Meier, or PLD over Peeke. If vets like Foligno, Atkinson, Nyquist, Werenski, Jones etc deem that the star player needs to go, he is having an impact on culture. Now this "fun guy" comes in into a room with Caufield, Slaf etc... do you want to take the risk? What if he decides that the media spotlight is too strong in MTL and he becomes disgruntled again? Can a younger Suzuki keep him in line? Either way, this'll be fun to keep an eye on the next two years.

Maurice/Waddell cannot wait to let him go, you must have to ask why?
MTL seems to have a really tight knit group. If Laine doesn't fit in then he doesn't and he will probably be put aside again. I don't think it can really have an effect on anyone aside from Laine himself.

And if the experiment fails then so be it, we got him for free anyway and his contract isn't much of a burden.

That was 3 years ago. A lot has changed since that time, but Portzline will not tell about it.

Interesting. I know there weren't many right hand centers in Columbus to feed him one timers on the left side so maybe that's why Torts said that.

The Habs top two centers are righty so no issue there.

Thanks!
He played with Roslovic in 2022/23 season and Jack is RH. But Larsen and Vincent prefered to move RH on the right side and LH on the left side. For example Marchenko was a left winger in Russia but he has played right winger in Columbus. Chinakhov was a right winger in Russia but he has played left winger.

Hopefully Laine has matured and figured out whatever was causing him to act like that, the Habs' locker room would never let something like that happen there.

That was one of the topics that Kent Hughes discussed with Laine before the trade, that he'd need to fit and buy into their culture.

Northern Hemisphere.
Cmon guys there's a ton of risk to this deal

- Risk we could still suck in 2 years and ONLY have 20m of cap space for taking on cap dumps

- Risk 21 y old 5th round pick Josh Roy doesn't get PP time

- Risk that our young and impressionable team could all become alcoholics because he was in the players assistance program

- Risk that Draisaitl or Crosby or even McDavid would want to sign with us but wed only have 10-12m in cap so we would HAVE to use some of our dozen second and third round picks to dump a contract.

- Risk that he pots 40 a year and we extend him long term , reducing the cap space available for acquiring veteran 3rd pair D rentals at the deadline during our window.

-Risk we win a cup in a couple years and the sheer overwhelming volume of salty salty tears flowing into the Fleuve from Ontario causes a Tsunami flood wave that dislodges Montreal Island and flushes us out into the Atlantic
... and bloody a risk of you (Montreal) a bonafinde Finland superstar find for starters. Remember Saku Koivu?!

- A Finn who speaks English better than most of you do.

- Score a goal or two maybe rather 40 or so.

- Ain't no fun waiting around for even you (Montreal) to get to the Play Offs and that year after year; yes years ...

- Cool dude.

- Has a beautiful (dito model!) American lady who will marry him very soon.

Rock on Patrik Laine!:thumbu:

OT God....

Dach is a possession monster and Hutson is an ice dancer with the puck. All he has to do is get open and fire his canon.

That's why I think this is going to be entertaining as heck and deadly.

Or not....
That seemed to be the problem in Columbus that I was hoping he would change this season. Laine wants to be the guy who can take the puck into the zone....but he tends to try one too many moves or simply loses possession.

That's why he and Gaudreau didn't mesh on the ice, they both want the puck on their stick.

His advanced stats did seem to indicate one of his biggest weaknesses was defensive zone exits so that checks out.

The other one was forechecking I think.
