I think it’s pretty clear at this point that Newhook is never going to be a full-time center in the NHL. He can fill in there in a pinch when needed, but his game is really not suited to it - he’s not a play driver or distributor, he’s not good defensively, he’s not good at faceoffs, and he just lacks the IQ for the position at the NHL level. He’s a decent middle-six winger, and he plays better on the wing because he isn’t forced to focus on things he isn’t good at.

I don't know where you've been this season but Newhook played much better hockey this season playing C over his time on the wing.

In fact, its pretty well known and heard over and over. Hard to take you seriously when you say thing like he plays better on the wing.

Bad defensively is deserved, its not by lack of effort, as you said, low IQ/acumen, he isn't the worst either. He is bad at faceoff but its something you can work on and get a few %.

But still after all that he is way way better playing C than winger.

He’d be great as a 2C in MTL. Seems like a lot of Habs fans have this “all or nothing” attitude about the 2C thing where they just unreasonably want another 1C on the 2nd line a la Pittsburgh, Edmonton, and the Washington Cup team (Kuznetsov, Backstrom). That isn’t realistic, and isn’t even necessary, imo. A decent 2C like Zacha would be just fine as long as the rest of the roster was built correctly.

I would like Zacha a lot. And like you said, we wouldn't have to undress ourselves to get him. He is 2-way C that is really good on the FO. Can log 18-19 minutes per game efficiently.

2 things are important for me about that 2C we would get :

1) He needs to be good enough to make Demidov produce offensively and cover him defensively.

2) He needs to ease Suzuki's task to play against top opposition night in night out.

I think Zacha checks both. And even if he is ending up putting only 50 points a year with us, I'm ok with it if Demidov produces 60-70 pts in his first 2-3 seasons and Suzuki produces 90-100 pts because of him.

I just think there might be better options out there for the Habs since Boston is so forward starved they are gonna want a package they can’t refuse (like the OP), and I think the Habs can find better value elsewhere, especially if they sacrifice in age and or AAV value. That being said, rosters can look a lot different after the first few days of July, so who knows.

Hell no. Remember that we are still in a rebuild. In addition to Reinbacher and Demidov, I wouldn’t move Hage, Kapanen, Fowler, Engstrom or Konyushkov either. Wouldn’t trade any young roster players either. The reasons vary, but all pretty much boil down to that the value they’d bring if they pan out, vastly outweighs what we’d get in a trade for them.

Imo, pretty much the only assets with significant value that should be on the table right now should be Beck, Mailloux, Dobes, Primeau, Roy, and the extra 1st and 2nd round picks.

Should easily be able to find a stopgap 2C with some combination of 2 or 3 of these pieces.

He still sucks defensively, still doesn’t win faceoffs, still is not a good possession player, isn’t good in transition, and can’t finish. He isn’t physical either. Has a muffin of a shot. So tell me how exactly he has been better? He’s a smaller, faster Josh Anderson without the physical element or toughness.

Tell me what about his game is suited for C? He’s about the worst possible player attribute-wise you want to be playing C on your team if you want to go anywhere.

Probably his worst, most fatal flaw though is that he loses the puck so damn much when he tries offensive zone entries, and he tries them a lot. He rips through the neutral zone and loses the puck or gets stripped at the blue line at what seems like 50% of the time, and he’s going so fast that he has no chance to get back or recover.

His speed is actually a detriment more often than not lmao

You know, there is a deal that I think might have some meat on the bone. Bruins fans can correct me if I'm wrong, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of depth in your pipeline. This is one of the teams that may want to acquire more picks to replenish their prospect pool.

As it stands now, the Bruins would be picking #4 in the draft, which would likely guarantee them one of Hagens/Matone/Frondell. Let me preface this proposal by saying I don't believe this deal is likely if the Bruins finish 1-5 in the draft. If they manage to slide down to 6 or lower, then I think this is reasonable.

To Mtl:
- Boston 1st rounder (6th or lower)
- I was toying with the idea of a bad contract as a premium for giving up the best asset, but I don't see anything particularly abysmal, and they don't look to be under a cap crunch for next year.

To Boston:
- Montreal 1st (currently #17)
- Calgary 1st (currently #16)
- 2nd, this year or next.
- B prospect like Mesar or Sean Farrell (local boy)

Rationale:
Montreal's system is full of prospects, at all stages of development. They have 9 picks in the first four rounds, so they're bursting at the seams with quantity. They have some high end in the system as well in Fowler, Demidov, Hage, and Reinbacher, though at least two of the four look to graduate in the next year. They can afford to offer quantity to try and grab one of the second tier talents available after #5

For Boston, while it's always ideal to have the best talent, their pool is very thin. They have drafted in the top 100 only 7 times this decade! Their highest draft picks since the 2018 draft were (chronologically) pick were 57, 30, 58, 21, 54, 92, and 25 last year. A total of 206 games played by every player drafted since 2018. They have 4 picks in the top 3 rounds this year, and 2 firsts next year (the second first is Toronto's, so most probably a late first rounder), so that's a start. It sounds like the intention is for this to be a quick retool, so this might get talent to the big club sooner. With the sheer lack of talent, perhaps more darts at the dartboard are ideal.

Because it's these two particular teams, I'd still say the odds are close to nil. But value wise, I think it has legs.

Regardless of value, it would be hard for the Bruins to do enough to keep Pasta happy while moving Zacha. Plus Zacha is on a pretty darn good contract.

Yeah. I see this as the biggest obstacle to prying Zacha out of Boston. Unless the Bruins are going to go full tank (they're not, and they can't)...they really can't afford to be moving a guy who they have in-house on a good deal that has proven chemistry that works with their remaining star forward.


The value though, is getting raked over the coals...but in a vacuum where Zacha was made available, i think this is probably in a realistic ballpark of what it'd cost. There are just way too many teams looking for Top-6 Centers, especially ones with size and reasonably within their prime. Particularly on a reasonable contract. The UFA market has zilch to offer, very few likely to be made available in trade, and there just isn't nearly enough supply to go around for all the demand. So that's going to drive the price up. In that context, a mid-1st and good prospect starts to sound...not all that outrageous.
