I think team owners have figured out that a father who brings his wife and kids to the game will spend more money at the game (food, soda, memorabilia) than singles.

Actually, I think they've found out that companies paying thousands upon thousands of dollars for a seat/suite bring in more revenue even if those folks don't show up to the game -- especially compared to Joe Schmo bringing his family to the game spending $150 bucks on tickets and $50 bucks on food.

Every game I go to, MSG is starting to remind me more and more of the Rock. And it's just not the fans in the corporate seats, the MSG marketing department is partially to blame - the t-shirt cannons, Pitbull songs blaring through the PA, etc. It wouldn't surprise me if they hire Ice Girls eventually.

There are a lot more distractions/in-game "entertainment" than there used to be, and I get that this is commonplace in lots of arenas across the US, but MSG used to be different. The game was enough to get the crowd going, along with the organ and some graphics/clips on the Jumbotron. I feel the same way about the new Yankee Stadium - every time I go to a game, there's always a crowd that starts "the wave" and that rarely happened 5+ years ago.

That being said, I'm not sure how much a loud arena affects on-ice play. I mean, they are a .500 team, so 5-6 is nearly reflective of their overall record. I think their play at home is indicative of their inconsistent play in general.

All good points. The promotional stuff is embarrassingly bad.

Put Metallica's Ride the Lightning album on during all breaks. Problem solved.

Exactly. They have been playing Master Of Puppets when the PP starts, so there's something.

Keeping your wits about you in public is called being an adult.

But if you think about which arenas are the so-called "tough" ones to play in, they're not so much places where there are fewer corporate fans -- all buildings have corporate fans today -- they are the ones where there are simply higher numbers of people: Montreal, Chicago, etc. OR lower metal ceilings: San Jose, Long Island, etc.

Nothing bothered me more about the renovation than losing 194 seats.

Have no doubt in my mind it's those ****ing outrageous ticket prices.

It takes two of my paychecks to go to a game with my brother, loudest fan I know. I'm lucky I haven't been to a game that resulted in a loss since 05-06 against Buffalo. Cause if I had, the experience would've just been a total waste. No energy.

Allow the real fans back in and this place becomes astronomically harder to play in, last time I was there the noise was equivalent to a ****ing library.

You must be so much fun at parties. You're at MSG, not a funeral.

Though maybe not a shock, I am more of a wine and cheese, suit-wearing, classical music-listening mother ******, but my occupation permits me to afford my season tickets, and that's all that matters.

If the Rangers or anyone else wants me to make noise, show me consistent effort and results worth cheering.

:handclap:

I started a trend within my circle of friends where we watch games with a cheese and meat spread, and copious bottles of wine. But I also throw the remote when Pouliot takes an offensive zone penalty. I really need to get one of those foam bricks that the Rodent used to use because looking under the couch for the remote batteries gets tiresome after a couple of bottles of red.

Tickets are too expensive. Music is too loud. 10.50 a beer. This year's team is about as inspiring as a dog turd. Lots of Wall Street Suits yakking about whether to sell or buy. . Blue Seats are gone. Nick Fotiu retired. Can't identify with the millionaire's on the ice, either. Players wear helmets. Two minute Instigation rule. My point is the MSG/Rangers experience has been a slow decline for years. Still a pretty good time up until late nineties actually. A more entertaining product always helps but will never be like it was (like everything else that used to be good).

I just assume its because the masses appreciate high scoring gong shows and the Rangers are neither offensively gifted or tough enough.

True.

But a quick look around this board shows theres still a lot of fans that THINK this team is gifted, even if it proves otherwise on a nightly basis.

However, deductive reasoning would assume these are also the people that are priced out.

I have fun at the Garden, but I can't help at wonder what it used to be like. It's becoming too much like other arenas. It's almost like going to the movies these days: the tickets are expensive, the food/drinks are even more expensive, just this whole Disneyland atmosphere pervades everything..

Having a team that frequently makes scoring goals look like splitting the atom doesn't help.

Hadron Collider?

Yeah, plus the movies in the theaters these days are pathetic, comic book, special effects-laden, void of charisma pieces of trash. No thanks....I'll watch the shows on Showtime and HBO, where the real talent lies.

But yeah, I'm not spending the insane $$ on tickets to go to the garden. My tv is good, my bathroom is clean, and the beer/vodka in my fridge didn't cost an arm and a leg. And when the game is over, and it's freezing, I'm inside and can just pass out.

Lol at citing helmets as a reason for quieter games.

There is no doubt that the expense has priced out the real fans. That and the younger crowd spends half the game looking at their smart phones.

Ticket prices push out the real fans and only corporate bums and resellers go. I know a few people who still have season tickets that they split 3-4 ways but those are becoming less and less.

I finally gave up my season tickets last year and I was surrounded by resellers on every side except the 4 in front of me which were a nice family from Long Island and they split games amongst the whole family. Every other seat had different types of tourists every game who did not know much about hockey.

Go down to lower level and its almost all corporate. I was actually telling my buddy last night who was at the game that they showed 3 women who had seats right on the glass and they weren't even watching action that was right in front of them they were just talking and looking around.

Atleast I can still go to a Yankee game and get $20 seats but we gotta make sure to eat before we go lol.

I never get loud or shout at games, I find it difficult to get emotionally invested in a game I have no bearing on the outcome of. Some exceptions of course, but i'm pretty calm at games.

I know I get looks for this, but is it weird that I don't scream like a lunatic at games?

the smart phone thing is a very good point, but I think it's probably that way at strip joints and Metallica concerts too.

The ticket prices are a joke. We have an alternative, it's called a 65" plasma.

And I'm actually sales and take people to the games....but not with my own money.

The loudest thing there are the numerous Potvin sucks chants. Those are really loud sometimes.
The problem isn't that there's no loud people there. The problem is that they'd rather chant about him than the Rangers.
