Grachev is another one. He had a 40-40-80 statline in 60 games in 2008-2009 in the OHL. People thought we had a steal in the 3rd round.

I guess it just never translated to the AHL. He had 16-22-38 in 76 games in the AHL in 09-10.

Having Matt Duchene and Cody Hodgson as your line mates also didn't hurt

I really don't think it's fair to put Cherry on here as we'll never know what he could've been. also I wouldn't put Pru on either as he was never hyped until after he was in the NHL. When I think of "prospect" I think of someone we drafted and then built up only to be let down. Brendl, Lundmark, Jessiman, etc.

Off the top of my head and in order:

Leetch
Richter
Brendl
Kreider
Dube (goodness, but the cupboard was bare in those days...)
Lundmark
Prucha
Cherepanov
Kloucek
Malhotra
Stepan
Grachev (I was one of the worst offenders)
McDonagh
Staal

The sad thing is Hank doesn't come in until somewhere after Montoya, wherever he slots in...

I'd be curious to hear from posters older than me about how much hype surrounded Pavelich, Sandstrom, Beck, etc.

EDIT: forgot Cherepanov (R.I.P.)

I thought Dube would be mentioned a lot more in this thread. Maybe because I joined the Rangers fandom in early 90s he was my first major prospect disappointment (I don't like the word "hype" applied to the likes of Leetch or Richter - for me personally it implies undeservingly).

I'm not someone to follow the prospects regularly or anything, but I take notice of what's going on. I didn't observe much until about 5 years ago. So in my time and in my lack of knowledge with this, I remember Grachev being hyped a lot. I was a big supporter of his from watching his highlights, seeing his size and skill. Now, the Kreider hype is crazy. Pre-lockout: I remember my brother always talking about Lundmark and Malhotra a ton.

I don't think it can be Kreider. He had/has some folks that really, really hyped him up, but he also had a ton of detractors as well.

What's with all the talking about Kreider in the past tense. He's 22 and still eligible for the Calder.

Another "Prince Chad" from a non-HFboards era:

Corey Hirsch

Best goalie in CHL award. His first year out of Juniors, he was 34-5-4 in the AHL (earning best goalie of AHL award),

Richter was struggling the 92-93 year (as was the entire team), and even got sent down to the AHL for a stint.

Corey Hirsch ended up being best known for the infamous Forsberg Olympic shootout goal (which even has its own stamp in Sweden):

He's now a goalie coach for St. Louis (previously for Toronto). If only HFBoards had been around in 92-93, I could only imagine the posts/threads.

I was one of Grachev's supporters and he easily had just as many detractors as Kreider does. I'm going with Buchnevich.

Buch? I think with Grachev this board has been very cautious with him. A lot of us raved about his talent but I'm holding my breath for him ever coming here. Don't think he's that hyped.

Ha ha, are you kidding? The most hyped prospect is some one who joined the organization a month ago in the 3rd round? What are we an expansion team?

Think it was partially a joke, but Buch is getting a lot of love around here.

any veteran poster remember if there was any hype around hank?

On the old Rangers.com boards there was a contingent very high on Henke. And it really came down to who the Rangers were going to give the opportunity to first, Montoya or Henrik. Both had recent success at that time.

For those that are saying it's unfair to put Cherry or Kreids in this thread bc they won't or still have a chance to prove themselves, respectively, this isn't a "biggest bust" thread. I mean, if this were a pens thread, Crosby would be the answer despite the accomplishments.

After further review, I see your point. When Cherry dropped to us I was beyond thrilled and a lot of us did hype him before his untimely passing.

I don't remember Hank getting a lot of hype, Pru was only hyped after he exploded his first year. I would like to add Grachev to my list.

Brendl....

Kreider

Lundmark
Grachev

Jessiman

As Ranger fans, we do a good job of pimping out our mid and late round picks. I remember Furrer, Dawes, Asplund, Mottau, and Holmqvist as having "bright" futures with our organization. Wouldn't name people like Leetch and Richter because their play justified their hype. Everyone on HF hated the Jessiman pick from what i remember, but similar with the McIlrath pick, took it in stride.

Lundmark and Grachev were hyped...to the MAX

The Manny hype was painful.

So was the Dube hype.

I think the Grachev/Thomas hype is diffrent.

Grachev is not even remotely talked about to the same extent as say the Nash trade. I wonder if Manny was on pas with Nash...

Hank was definitely getting hype as a potential good starter, but Montoya was getting the same, if not more hype.

Lundmark was the most overhyped I can remember. I think Grachev was as talented as advertised but just not very smart.

Cherepanov RIP, Kreider, Brendl, Prucha, Grachev. No particular order.

Prucha was never hyped as a prospect that I can remember. He came out of nowhere as a rookie and scored 30-22 goals in his first 2 years. Then people started to think that he could be a big time scorer for us and a lot of people loved his non-stop motor. To put him in the "overhyped prospect" category is just wrong in my opinion. And I'm not just picking on Kris Chreider, just that you were the last one to mention him. Was Pru overhyped? Absolutely and I was one of those that did it... It just wasn't when he was a "prospect". He was already in the league.

Maybe my definition of prospect is wrong. But I see our prospects right now as guys like Skjei, Miller, Fast, Lindberg. Guys like Hagelin, Moore, MDZ are all young players but they're not prospects anymore.

People were saying Prucha> Crosby early in their careers, before they joined the NHL. He had mad hype man.
