Hey everybody!
Being a relatively new NYR fan (2010 onwards), I wondered who in your opinion is the most hyped Rangers prospect of all time?
Having followed the team these past few seasons and lurking on these boards, I have been able to piece together some understanding of past Rangers players, but I have no idea how the players from the 80s for instance were viewed as prospects.
In my time lurking on these boards the most hyped prospect is Chris Kreider. Reading about him from posters who had seen him, made me so excited to see him in a Rangers-uniform, so I wondered how Kreiders' hype compared to others.

My apologies if this is something that's been discussed ad nauseam.

In the recent era, the 1999 draft of Brendl/Lundmark ranks pretty high. Pavel Brendl had one of the finest shots you will ever see (and also the lousiest, laziest demeanor).

Smith doubled down, unfortunately too late, and on the wrong draft.

I'd like to put out an honorable mention for Tomas Kloucek. A super hard-hitting defensemen (homegrown Darius Kaspiritis) that would have a sticky-ed thread with 700+ posts if he was in the system today (especially if they drafted him instead of Tarasenko).

Kloucek was great until he got injured, which ruined his career. Would've had a tremendous career otherwise.

Brendl. Then he showed up to camp out of shape and blamed it on the flu. Sign of things to come.

I loved Kloucek. I remember a specific game I was at, where he was coming out of the box after a penalty and as he came out he literally jumped out into a player skating by with the puck and destroyed him and the Garden went bonkers. I always loved him for that specific play, I wish I could find it on youtube.

You joined in 2011, how do you know about that thread.

Been on these boards since '03 , I've been around for awhile but was posting under a different user name back in '05. It's a shame that this board lost an abundance of awesome posters, it's tough reading some of these threads and comments.

This thread screams Pavel Brendl. All the talent in the world but absolutely zero heart.

Honorable mentions: Prucha, Korpikoski, Kreider

Did we hype Korpikoski? I guess we did because he was a 1st rounder. He has turned out to be a solid NHL player imo.

Korpi was one of the safest bets to be an NHL player out of that draft, but his ceiling to me was limited. At least amongst my circle of hockey friends, he was being pimped as a future top 6 forward. I figured him as a solid bottom six forward that can PK. He turned out to be pretty much that.

Off the top of my head and in order:

Leetch
Richter
Brendl
Kreider
Dube (goodness, but the cupboard was bare in those days...)
Lundmark
Prucha
Cherepanov
Kloucek
Malhotra
Stepan
Grachev (I was one of the worst offenders)
McDonagh
Staal

The sad thing is Hank doesn't come in until somewhere after Montoya, wherever he slots in...

I'd be curious to hear from posters older than me about how much hype surrounded Pavelich, Sandstrom, Beck, etc.

EDIT: forgot Cherepanov (R.I.P.)

I think Prucha came out of nowhere more-so than him being hyped, although I wasn't around for that draft. He was picked in round 8, 240th overall.

I agree with Kreider.

Weren't people excited over Cherepanov? He dropped right into our laps if I remember correctly.

RIP.

In my time as a die-hard Rangers fan enough to know prospects and what they might mean to the Rangers?

Jessiman.

I remember watching a Rangers show on MSG in 2005, as sort of a "season preview" to prepare the fans for the season after the lockout, and that show hyped the CRAP out of Hugh Jessiman and Rick Kozak as two power-forwards who were going to lead the Rangers to glory.

Whoops.

But I also remember guys like Brendl, Lundmark, Immonen. Prince Chad :sarcasm:

There have been a lot. Teams tend to overrate their prospects immensely.

Recently i have to agree; weren't people saying 30 30 coming o ut of the draft?

Grachev is another one. He had a 40-40-80 statline in 60 games in 2008-2009 in the OHL. People thought we had a steal in the 3rd round.

I guess it just never translated to the AHL. He had 16-22-38 in 76 games in the AHL in 09-10.
