Injury Report: Morgan Rielly on LTIR (update: expected return Dec 29)

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
My hope is that this helps Liljegren and Sandin take the next step. Lilly has a chance to be our #1 for the short-term and Sandin is gonna get a long look at top 4 minutes.

Not much else positive from this, brutal news... Rielly is undervalued by a lot of Leafs fans and his mobility and transition game will be sorely missed from the backend.

I'm already prepared for us to win a single game and people say we don't need him anymore though!😂

Funnily enough in terms of defensive impact losing Muzzin and then Brodie were much bigger losses, and the leafs D managed to handle those by committee fairly fine this season. The teams.steuggles this season have mostly been offensive underperforming+goalie injuries.

Now that Samsonov and Murray are returning to play things may not be as dark as things expected. The team is just going to keep playing tight defensive hockey to offset the losses to the top 4

Hopefully this is the case. Sandin seems to have a very short leash when it comes to Keefe unlike some others who make the same mistakes/turnovers he does. Hopefully they try Liljegren on the PP1 even though I know our PP system doesn't really make a difference who is at point because they are just there to give the puck to Matthews or Marner.

Fuuuuuuuck. Rielly, Brodie, Muzzin all on LTIR, absolutely massive hit to the D. Samsonov out too :/ Not gonna be pretty, we’re gonna have to play a super conservative style as a team, low risk and forwards helping a tonne defensively, or we’ll get absolutely lit up.

Depending on Rielly/Brodie timelines, this could make a move for a dman essential. Probably a good idea regardless, with Muzzin for sure out for ages (maybe career over), and Sandin not playing well.

I guess it's time to go against the family.

Its my take right. I don’t like the player. I think he is absolute crap especially for his cap hit. Time will tell whether I am right or wrong. I can see the PP getting way better without Rielly. Rielly’s defensive game is abysmal so its not like we are losing a lot there. Lets see what happens when others are given an opportunity rather than constantly giving it to someone who routinely shows up year after year without improving any of his skillset. (same muffin shot, same bone head decision making and positioning in his own zone, not physical) Gonna be an interesting next month and a half.

If his skating takes a hit long-term that's going to become an anchor real quick.

I've really not been too happy with Rielly's game this year. His risk assessment has been too aggressive or ill timed, his defense has been too fire drill and his PP work is just ineffective. I hate to see him hurt and miss time since he's obviously a cog back there, but I'm also wondering if we can get past this injury by committee and not be too impacted since Rielly's play hasn't been at his A level. We obviously will need Rielly at the top of his game if we want to do anything, but the October/November 2022 version of Rielly isn't an insurmountable loss.

If we can trade for
Gavrikov
Soucy
Zub
I don't know what the cost is but no chychrum an injury away from an injury
Trade chips
Kerfoot
Engvall
Robertson
2024 1st rd pk

No 2023 1st rd pk to good of a draft
We may have a shot at Gauthier future second line center .

No knies need to see what we have in him.

Appease the entitled fans then?
Entitled....55 years since I saw a team win. I am entitled to expect a management team committed to winning, not being nice, not trying, but actually succeeding.
If you don’t expect or demand they win, then you are the type stopping us from winning. Potential is not enough for me but must be for you.

I think the biggest problem with Rielly continues to be the same thing it has been for years. He is not a #1 NHL defenceman but he has to play that role since the Maple Leafs have not had one. Since he fills that role, he gets the ice time, gets the points, and of course the contract to go with it.

If you could magically add a true #1 guy to this team, Rielly slots into his proper spot getting less prime PP time, handling less high leverage situations, and probably getting a little less on his contract.

I worry about the latter part of the contract. On the other hand, just about every team is going to have multiple boat anchor players soon with all the 7-8 year deals flying around. (Aside: Why the NHL didn't lower the maximum term in the last CBA, I have no idea.)

well.... this can't be good. big test for Liljegren and Sandin coming up.
I'm sure we will be fine just might be some tough games coming up without Rielly, Muzzin and Brodie

if Muzzin ever comes back

This is simply not true. Fans are not preventing the Leafs from winning in any capacity.

Mete is truly awful, even in the AHL. I would like to see Hofenmeyer get a look, he has been the Marlies best defensemen at the games I have been at.

Bring up kral and let the team play as is. We will have both goalies back for a bit soon which will help.

Don’t trade a first rounder, we need our assets.

Hate to see this. I hope to see Liljegren make a jump here. He’s got a lot to offer and we’re just scratching the surface me thinks.
