I disagree. It's usually a big factor.

For example, on a bodycheck if you hit a player shoulder to shoulder and then make contact to the head it's always treated differently than direct contact to the head.

A crosscheck to the shoulder is never a suspension. The fact is started with the shoulder is definitely a mitigating factor. Whether or not you agree with that is a different story.

The NHL takes many factors into account that have no correlation with the infraction itself - such as injury.

Mike Hoffman got 2 games for cross-checking Logan Couture in the back that rode up to his head.


I dont agree with your assertion that a crosscheck to the shoulder is never a suspension. Unless you mean that a crosscheck to the shoulder that only connects with the shoulder is not a suspension, which is not what this was.

It's worse on this angle.

His stick bends, meaning he got a lot of velocity on it. It also proves it was a direct head shot, and not the shoulder as Reilly claimed in an interview. maybe he aimed for the shoulder and missed, but that's on him regardless.
