But the CODE is supposed to protect the players

EXACTLY!

The code is supposed to protect players from danger.

Not give excuses for why players are putting others in danger.

I hope that makes sense to anyone mentioning the code in Riellys defense.

Hopefully it helps them rethink their understanding of "the code"

Yup. Reilly should have taken his lumps and lived to fight another day. He made a stupid, and selfish mistake. Now his club is going to have to fight for the playoffs without him.
That really is the takeaway from all this.

What Greig did can be debated forever, but its mostly irrelevant after Reilly broke the rules instead of handling it in a reasonable way. And yes, will deservedly be suspended and only hurt his own cause.

Here is an article on the unwritten rules:

Not sure if the URL works:

Not all unwritten rules are “safety related”.

Well, its picking and choosing imo. And protected by an unwritten code that is constantly being bent to someones will whenever this stuff comes up. I don't get it. Its completely foreign to me why this would piss anyone off more than 100 other things that happen in game. I wouldn't have batted an eye anymore than a team spanking us 5-0 and still celebrating goal 5. Might get a f*** you loser out of me.

That's right. Players get angry at a ton of things during a game, which is why if you're smart you try and not provoke the other team all the time especially when you're winning. Why do you think that when you score the first few goals in a game players celebrate those goals, but when they're scoring the 7th or 8th or 9th goal against the other team and its now 7-1, 8-1 or 9-2 or something all of a sudden you choose not to celebrate nearly as hard? Because its just plain common sense that you don't kick your opponents when they're already down.

They're already pissed that they're losing to you and you go and rub it in their faces? Yeah can't imagine why people don't like that crap and will respond.

He certainly threw the last one.
He sure did, and he should be proud of himself after he'll get suspended for 6 or more games and cost his team their #1D while the Leafs are sitting in 7 place and aren't guaranteed to make the playoffs. I'm sure if the Leafs miss the playoffs because of this all Leafs fans will rejoice that at least Reilly didn't let that slap shot on an empty netter go unpunished, a goal that was gonna be scored either way.

If he winds up and takes another slapper will it hurt your feelings again?
I'll give Greig props for having the balls to do it again and facing more retribution when players from that team get pissed at him too.

Are there any other examples of a player showboating after a win like that when his team is at the bottom of the standings for the 6th straight year?
David Riitch when the Flames beat the Oilers in a game jumped up and down like he won the cup Oilers destroyed him next game and was pulled lol

Because it's an empty net. It's unnecessary.

Why do players get upset when a player will casually put the puck into the net after the whistle goes? Same thing. Its just unnecessary and seen as disrespect.

Yeah but it's silly to react that much.

It's the same when the whistle blows for an offside or something and the offensive player keeps dangling around the players after the whistle. Someone takes exception and wacks his stick or something.

I always thought that was hilariously silly. But no one is trying to injure the other player.
