Some more thoughts ...
Goalie: Berdin was very average to be honest, but settled in nicely after a poor first period. If you're only giving up two goals a game then you're giving your team a good chance to win. And he's a ton of fun to watch. His puckhandling is a double-edged sword, though. He got overzealous and took a delay of game penalty by firing the puck over the glass at the beginning of the 3rd when it was still a one-goal game, but he also sprung a Moose player on a breakaway with a pass and is almost like a third d-man back there who can set up breakout passes. He needs to be more consistent and he's already 24 so I'm not sure if he makes the NHL or heads back to Russia.
Defence: As I said earlier Gawanke and Chisholm were the stars but I'll go through them all. Heinola had a brutal giveaway in the first that led to Milwaukee's 2nd goal. I think he was outplayed by Chisholm but that's just a one-game sample size. He seems to struggle with bigger, bruising forwards but displays excellent positioning and a nice stick in the defensive zone. Offensively you can see the creativity in his game. He's an elite PP QB at the AHL level and was able to set up a number of opportunities both on the PP and even strength. Samberg was fine. Nothing really happens for either side when he's on the ice, which is what you want from a defensive defenceman. Just wish he could produce a bit more in the AHL. But otherwise he was very good and defended the slot as fiercely as an Alamo defender. The Admirals really couldn't get many dangerous looks with him on the ice. Kovacevic played to his strengths that game. Just a very low-profile, positionally-sound defensive game. Not sure he's ever an everyday NHLer but as a right-handed 7-8 kinda guy you might be able to get some use out of him. I was sitting right by the Moose bench so I could hear Oligny (he's captain) hyping up his team consistently. Dude is a warrior on the ice and seems to be well-liked by his team. He was getting into it with the Admirals players and he kept rallying the troops even when the Moose fell behind 2-0. He can captain the Moose anytime for me. Even before the goals started coming for the Moose (which he was a big part of), I thought Gawanke looked dangerous out there. He's got really good offensive chops and actually takes care of his own end too. He's a great skater and him and Chisholm are dynamite as a pair. He also had two huge shot blocks in the final minute of the game that staggered him, but he appeared to be alright. Hard to think he doesn't get a shot with the Jets next year, especially being a rightie. Speaking of playing with the Jets, I agree with others who say Chisholm deserves a shot with them next year. He's all over the ice, terrific in both his own end and in the opposing team's zone and has been developing exceptionally well considering his draft position.
Forwards: First, I thought Barron had a really good game. Physical, with a hard shot and he was getting under the Admirals' skin. We could have a poor man's PLD in him. Gustafsson was terrific in his own zone and does all the little things right. Didn't see a ton of offensive skill in his game, but it's a small sample. I can see him taking the torch from Lowry and being a shutdown C for us. I know Eyssimont was their leading scorer this year but he didn't do much of anything offensively this game. He's a good pest though and was causing issues for Milwaukee by goading them into penalties. Malott was one of their more dangerous forwards but that speaks more to the lack of scoring on the team than it does to him - I thought he was just slightly above average. Poganski and Maier (their other two "dangerous" scorers) were virtually invisible. Also, I don't know who this Jones guy is, but man, he's a gamer. He was one of the only Moose (maybe Barron being the other) who was going to the net and making life miserable for Dooley. He's a smaller guy and was getting abused all game but kept bouncing back - taking hits to make plays, getting roughed up in front of the net, blocking shots. You could tell the Admirals were getting frustrated by him - a real thorn in their side - and it was fantastic to see him rewarded with a goal.
- The refereeing was horrible. I guess the officials are getting prepped for their NHL call-up these playoffs. Very one-sided officiating and the Moose got called for a penalty almost immediately after each goal they scored. The Moose, however, were dynamite on their PPs, going 2-for-4 whereas Milwaukee was 0-for-7 and many times struggled to even gain entry into the zone.
- The building was pretty lively once the Moose woke up. I haven't had that much fun at a hockey game for a few years. I think this shows True North that if the players on the ice are willing to put in an effort the fans will appreciate it. Everyone around me was all having a good time and it was a fun atmosphere. If the Jets can bring in a coach who demands accountability/can bring in players who give more effort than I think we'll see this liveliness return to Jets games.
- The Moose still need to run the table here to take the series, but the first W is a big step, especially with how they were able to battle back from going down 2-0. We'll see what happens, but being able to play both of the next two games at home should help. I think the players really fed off the crowd and in turn the crowd fed off the players ... just a positive feedback loop.
