Out of all the NHL teams who have currently played 4 or more games, the Habs have given up the least amount of goals.

With Monty starting in goal for two games to put that in perspective.

I expected the D to get torched, and they may very well will as the season wears on, but so far they’ve taken this challenge head in. Guhle has been looking amazing also.

Fair enough. For a broader view, Montreal is currently ranked 13th in GA/GP and 17th in SA/GP. Good/decent start overall, but especially impressive for a group of rookies. It'll be interesting to see how this brand new group evolves.

Meanwhile, the team's two best defensemen – Edmundson and Matheson – are still out.

To be fair Monty has been pretty good too. That save on the PK against the Pens was money.

To be fair, some of those guys were purely potential and we rated them based on how we feel they'll perform this season, not based on career projections. Guhle is outperforming his expectations so far and by a LOT. I haven't seen every game, but Harris has been solid. I actually haven't noticed Xhekaj all that much for some reason.

We all know the dam is going to burst but who would have thought this 4 games in?

Some teams get continuously propped up, labeled contenders and called elite...and when it matters, they go out and lose because at heart they are losers.

The Habs are the opposite. They get virtually zero respect, they're criminally underrated and, because they're a team with character, they'll find a way to exceed expectations. Sometimes.

Is it too late to rename this thread "Florida's defence after 3 games is..."

Fortunately Montreal has both team's first round pick. :naughty:

Also, Guhle is probably already better defensively than any D man Toronto has had for Matthews' entire tenure.
No one has scouted him yet and it's 5 games into the season. Please keep putting the cart before horse. 82 games are alot for an NHL rookie D man in that role.

5 games. You are right though teams probably underestimated them. We will see how it goes and if that continues.

I'm not saying they'll be an elite team. I'm not even saying they be decent. I'm just saying that there's no reasonable expectation that locks Montreal into basement dwelling status...unless the belief is that'll be another year of record-setting injuries.

The Habs are quite capable of finishing something like 35-35-12. As past performance has shown, they also can thrive as an underdog.

We'll see it's a tough division and they're the worst team in it. Tha Habs always start off hot. I'd be absolutely floored if they finish as a ppg team. Frankly I hope they do but I do not see it as sustainable.

No. The lineup is putrid. Give it time. They will feed on the bottom.
