I hope not, can you imagine what Matthews and Marner's agents will demand if Laine gets payed that much? Leafs will really be in cap hell if that happens, I'm just hoping we don't see any crazy offer sheets on any of the RFAs this summer.
I hope Matthews and Marner will be signed.

I dont think the Leafs will be able to sign both of them until the end of training camp next season when the Leafs are able to put Horton's cap in LTIR again, until then at least 1 of Marner and Matthews will likely remain unsigned unless the Leafs can trade Zaitsev and/or Orpik'd Marleau.

This thread isn't about offer sheeting Leafs players in general.

This thread is about a team (Montreal) that desperately needs a #1C offer sheeting two players (Marner and Matthews) for an amount that a team already against the cap (Toronto) would struggle to afford. No other available RFA outside of Point makes sense for Montreal to go after; however Point isn't worth paying 12+ million a year whereas Marner and Matthews would be.

Stop being so defensive; your players are attractive pieces and your team is in a position where a big offer sheet COULD actually make them give up a player, or put you in true cap hell.

You point out that OS's HAVE NOT HAPPENED since the last CBA ... Sure, you're absolutely right. But that doesn't mean they cannot and will not happen this upcoming season. As I said, this RFA class is the best in recent memory; unless Laine/Rantanen/Matthews/Marner are all signed before July 1st, there are teams out there who very likely could offer sheet.

You continue to drone on the same narrative without any substantiation; anecdotally it hasn't been done the past few years but that does not mean it won't happen. At best, it is unlikely.

Yes, it is absolutely you. Not the entire fan base; many leafs fans have come in here and been fine, you're just being a ********.

He's being a clown for sure. But this thread is flawed right from the start. Habs cannot OS both players simultaneously. The best you could hope for is one of our key players risking having to play for a much worse team in order to increase his aav by what, a million or so per year?

What part of that appeals to a competitive person? If the Leafs weren't looking good, no way Tavares signs. I would think a legit chance at a cup is more enticing than the money. It's not like Montreal can point to how great the club is and that Matthews is the missing piece. Andersen has outplayed Price for around 1.3 years so far, and is continuing to do so. Your defense is no better, depth and skill at forward is lacking. Why would he do that?

I know it's fun to think about trying to screw your competitor, but I don't see the rationale for why Matthews would sign with the habs

Horton can be placed on LTIR over the summer as well.

LTIR Isn’t Free Cap Space And The Leafs Need To Be Cautious In Using It
"This means that teams must become salary cap compliant before they can place players on LTIR since the injury exception to the cap does not come into effect until the season has started"

I believe that during the summer, teams are allowed to go over the Cap by 10% but by the last day of training camp they are expected to have their team salary ( including their LTIR casualties) below the cap.

Article is incorrect and is from 2016. The Leafs almost used Horton over the summer I believe 2 years ago but we're able to avoid it. That being said Lou did bring up the fact that he could if he wanted use LTIR over that time period

Here is what Capfriendly says

"
Can LTIR be used in the off-season?

Yes, LTIR can be used in the off-season while the 10% off-season cushion is active. LTIR in the off-season is calculated using the basic equation outlined above, which permits a team to exceed the off-season salary cap. To use off-season LTIR the team must provide doctors proof that the player in question will continue to be injured at the beginning of the regular season for 10 NHL games and 24 calendar days.

At the start of the season the teams LTIR relief & ACSL is recalculated when the 10% cushion is removed.
"

Here's a link specifically about when the Leafs were prepared to do it. This was actually confirmed by Bill Daly

No one knows what is going on with LTIR this NHL off-season

?? Thats facts you can’t deny. If you don’t think arizona is not patiently waiting to see if matthews it’s the offersheet timeframe i don’t know what to say.

I'd do just about anything to have Matthews on this team, but unless he's willing to sign a deal with a shit ton of performance bonuses I can't see it happening. Unless he demands a trade or something, which is even less likely.

why in the hell would Montreal give a tons of first round picks for Marner ? you would give 4 years of high picks for Marner ?
The cost to sign a RFA is simply stupid and no GM wants to touch that.

$9,131,645 or greaterFour first-round picks
[TBODY] [/TBODY]
ITS INSANE, you do understand that MTL top draft picks are going to be in the top 10 for 2 +years, right ?

you would give Toronto a dynasty for Marner, really ?
Montreal easily gives up 4 1st round picks for Marner

Leblanc, Tinordi, McCaron, Sherback, this is the kind of junk we draft anyways

How do offer sheets work? I mean, if you have to give up a 1st...does it have to be a pick from the upcoming draft or can you defer to another year? OR say you have 2 or 3 1st round picks through trades...can you defer to another team's 1st that you own?

Lol that’s your list? He’s just asking an obvious question and since you have no rebuttal you get all sensitive.

The habs were the only team willing to give Radulov a chance and he left after a year.

Tavares wouldn’t even meet with your GM

He's not just asking a simple question, he uses a tone that makes people think Montreal sucks as a city and nobody wants to go there. He asked if there were any good players who wanted to go there. Ill agree these are not top players, but still good players.

Nobody knows if Radulov had more offers. I don't think you know more than anyone.

If Tavares really liked the Leafs at the point of wearing their pajamas, I respect he didn't want to go to the enemy.

And by the way, nobody was signing with Toronto when they sucked.

lol wut? your post is so wrong its not even funny, when did nylander ask for a trade?, he said through the whole process he only wanted to be a leaf, nice come back lol next time maybe think before posting non sense

He wanted to be a leaf, but not dying to be one apparently, because he would have been at training camp if it were the case. I can't believe I,m the only one who thinks like that.

So he should have just taken ANY deal the team offered and kept his mouth shut, yes? Hmmm.....

That's EXACTLY how Nazi-Germany started.

There is a risk factor here. Marner don't turn the Habs around into a Contender and we likely still struggle with that D we have. Yeah, we have drafted some 1st round bust but when we had a top 10 pick (which is very possible in the next 4 drafts even with Marner), we have done very well.

Add that Marner and Matthews won't sign the offer sheet with the Habs and this idea should be squashed. It don't make sense for many reasons.

Why not just throw money at Panarin if he reaches UFA. A much smarter plan that costs us cap space only and we are not using at the moment.

For your own knowledge, the Nazi party was actually elected democratically.

And what I really think is if he really wanted to be a team guy, he would have signed either a bridge or a reasonable contract to be with his teammates since day 1 instead of missing 25% of the season.

I picked him in my fantasy at the beginning of the season, so I was looking a lot on the leafs board for news on him. Most Leafs fan were ready to trade him, calling him a non team player and rightfully so.

Now I don't say he doesn't want to play in Toronto. I just said he wasn't DYING to play in Toronto, as a reply to another poster who said ironically that Matthews and Marner would be DYING to play in Montreal. Not that I think it will happen, but I can't let anyone shit on an entire city and team and get away like that so easily.

Um. And how do you know that the Leafs offered a "reasonable contract" or a bridge?

Did you hear some rumours from the media? The media that...........owns the Leafs?

Dude.

None of us know a GD thing about what was really offered. All we know is what happened. He signed a deal in time.

No performance bonuses on regular deals. Only ELCs and 35+ contracts (also some other exception related to players who have missed a lot of time to injury, but wouldn’t apply here).

I don't know the numbers, you're right, but not playing for a quarter of the season, who does that ? Certainly not a guy who is DYING to play for his team. Like I said, I've seen lots of leafs fans here who wanted him gone since october for the exact reason I'm telling you right now.

It would not be 2019 1st round picks the draft happens in June then July 1st free agency it would start with 2020...but to offer sheet anyone you have to own all of your own picks....they cannot have been acquired from another team.

Those Leaf fans are dummies.

And y'know "who does that"? Someone in a totally unique situation. An elite young player who is an RFA, and who has two more elite friend/players coming up to RFA the very next year, and whose team just went out and blew 11 million/year on Tavares. THAT's who.

"Caving in" and doing whatever the team wants is not a precedent that he was prepared to set. Nor should he have. It's not the player's responsibility to manage the salary cap for the team. That's on the team. So it was a tough process. Now comes the even more difficult Matthews/Marner deals.........it's a damn good thing Nylander took his negotiations very seriously, so he didn't screw up the other two guys'.

Funny part is I agree with you and totally understand why he did it. But I still maintain my point that if he was dying to play in Toronto, as the other posters said, he wouldve taken a little less for the team. Sometimes it's on the player. And you just gave the best example in your post I'm quoting right. Tavares did take a few dollars less to be with the team and city he was dying to play for.
