Well they can suck on my left toenail's fungus, I'm tired of watching these two. Waste of roster spots

You're certainly entitled to your opinion.

I've actually been quite pleased with Josh Anderson's start to the season. He's been skating great, playing physical hockey and hasn't flubbed chances.

He also very nearly scored a gorgeous shorthanded goal that he rang off the crossbar.

That sums up Josh's stint with us perfectly: almost

I think the main piece here would be David Savard who could return a late 1st round pick. Though honestly he's been so good in his stint with Montreal that I would consider re-signing him for 1 or 2 years.

The rest can be had for mid or late round picks/long shot prospects. Make your bid!

David Savard - UFA ($3,5M)
Christian Dvorak - UFA ($4,45M)
Joel Armia - UFA ($3,4M)
Jake Evans - UFA ($1,7M)
Michael Pezzetta - UFA ($0,81M)
Cayden Primeau - RFA ($0,89M)
Justin Barron - 1 more year left @ $1,15M then RFA
Brendan Gallagher - 2 more years left @ $6,5M then UFA
Josh Anderson - 2 more years left @ $5,5M then UFA

Can retain on 1 contract for 2024-25, more after that.

I'd keep Savard, Gallagher, Evans and Armia

On pace to win 2/3rds of their games, and adding a star forward in 3 months.

Maybe save this for at least the new year.

Park Anderson on the third line and don't expect much more. Cap is rising anyway. The contract will run its course. Gally, same.

It's kind of early in the season for this thread. But I'll play along.

David Savard - UFA ($3,5M)
Gets moved for more return than most here want to admit, unless he's re-signed. I'd extend him if I were Hughes, but only for a year, or two if we get a discount. If moved, he gets the retention slot.

Christian Dvorak - UFA ($4,45M)
Return will be depressing for Habs fans, even with retention (ie, if Savard is kept). A 2nd is being very optimistic at this point.

Joel Armia - UFA ($3,4M)
Might be a darkhorse rental and fetch a 2nd, if he has a solid season, like his 2nd half last year. It's kind of early to know.

Jake Evans - UFA ($1,7M)
I hope he's re-signed. He's a pro, has speed and can play multiple roles. Plus, we need to keep a few guys from the Finals run.

Michael Pezzetta - UFA ($0,81M)
Gonzo the second another tough forward can take his spot. Might stick around as a 14th forward, though.

Cayden Primeau - RFA ($0,89M)
Let's wait and see how his season goes, ok ? He's unlikely to be a deadline trade regardless.

Justin Barron - 1 more year left @ $1,15M then RFA

Brendan Gallagher - 2 more years left @ $6,5M then UFA
Unlikely to be a deadline deal, and isn't living up to his contract. Let's just hope for LTIR.

Josh Anderson - 2 more years left @ $5,5M then UFA
Unlikely to be a deadline deal, and isn't living up to his contract. Let's just hope for LTIR. Still, he's at least an effective, mobile but physical 3d liner this season, so I can't complain.

Savard will likely get a 1st

Dvorak maybe like a 3rd/4th?

Evans the same as Dvorak

No one will likely want the others

Gallagher is having a solid season right now, and we would probably get shit for him, so we might as well just keep him

I don't mind keeping some of them as depth players, especially since aside from Savard they don't have much value. But at the same time, you got Heinman, Kapanen, Demidov, Reinbacher, Roy, Mailloux, Engstrom, Beck, and possibly more in need of full-time spots in the next year.

So, if you gotta clear the dead weight to make space might as well grab a pick during this season

Some of these guys will flame out, and you can't just hand kids roster spots.

Barré-Boulet was meant to be depth, but showed Roy he didn't have it made quite yet. Without Barré-Boulet, Roy might get an undeserved roster spot, and go the Gilbert Dionne/Alexandre Daigle type of route, and stop improving and working on his game.

The whole point of this year is to be #InTheMix and get some growth out of the kids. Selling again and telling them we intend to tank again isn't how you do it. Savard stays to mentor Hutson, Gallagher and Anderson aren't going anywhere even at 50% so buyout is the only option.

Only ones that are a possibility IMO are Armia and Dvorak but you'd need to retain 50% just for the privilege of getting a 4th round pick back. Not worth it unless you need to make space for another F from Laval.

Depending on how Mailloux does this year, they might want him up in the NHL permanently by TDL and the odd man out would be either Savard and Barron as the only natural RD. Barron being the younger one would make Savard the logical choice as trade bait.

I think Savard ends up in Dallas or Edmonton along with a late pick for a 1st
Armia @50% somewhere for a 3rd
Evans if not resigned probably gets a 3rd + 5th maybe even a 2nd if the center market is thin

Dvorak probably becomes unmovable without having another retention slot available, Pezetta I think re-signs and continues to play 13/14 F for another year

I’m just going to start off by saying that I don’t think that the Habs will go into full blown rebuild and tank this season. A lot bad would have to happen to them throughout the course of the season for them to throw in the towel. They will come up short on being a playoff team but only miss by like 8-10 points. Now if they were selling this is how I think it would play out;

Savard - he should return a late 1st. Now I am suspecting that late 1st to be one a few years from now so in 2026, 2027 or 2028. I figure that pick would be used as trade bait for when Montreal plans on having a playoff team. Personally I’d rather keep him and sign him to a one or two year extension. He has broke a lot of rookie defencemen in for the Habs because he is a perfect partner being very defensive minded.

Dvorak - I highly doubt that he gets much interest. He is a very vanilla third liner who is signed to a bigger contract at 4.5 million. Owen Beck is his eventual successor and I’d rather him play his first full season out in Laval. Let Dvorak walk as a UFA.

Armia - he is very frustrating to watch. He has the size but isn’t physical. He has lots of skill but it doesn’t show every game. If a team could trade for Armia at 50% retained and get the good version of Armia they are laughing. He is a player who can play like a second liner one game and then a fourth liner the next. If traded I could see a 3rd or 4th rounder with 50% retention.

Evans - he is a keeper. I’d try to sign him to a one or two year contract extension. He kills penalties and takes lots of face offs. He is nothing special but is very dependable. The return for him on a trade would be minimal.

Pezzetta - he is a keeper as a 14th forward. The return would be very minimal for him. Keep him around until Tuch or F. Xhekaj are ready to take on his role. He is a player that can sit in the press box and it’s not stunting his development like it would for some other rookie who should be playing in Laval.

Primeau - Dobes outplayed him in pre season and Fowler is in the pipeline. I don’t see a long term future in net for Primeau with the Habs. He will eventually be the odd man out. Thing is I’d rather keep Dobes in Laval for a second full season and let him develop. Primeau has this season to audition to other teams if he has an NHL future. I can’t see him getting traded this season at all.

Barron - now he may be the off man out. He is the all the tools, no tool box player. Size, skating and skill plus he was a first round pick. I think all Habs fans will tell you that Mailloux is already better than him but with Barron not being waivers exempt they had to go with Barron. If he gets traded I see the return as a 4th to 6th round pick. If he goes on waivers he will get claimed but are teams willing to jump the waiver line and trade for him?

Gallagher and Anderson - I’m lumping the two together because they make 12 million a year combined. They only have two years left after this one and I can’t see the Habs being Stanley Cup contenders in that time. Once their contracts run out it should be go time for the Habs. They should have a playoff team built by then and having 12 million come off the books will give them lots of buying power to go big game hunting in UFA or through trades. Just ride their contracts out.

Matheson - I’m throwing his name out there as a dark horse. Now many things have to go right for him to become available. He is making 4.875 million this and next season. At 50% retained he could be a steal for two playoff runs. He is a workhorse and plays 25 plus minutes a game. Now the only way he becomes available is if Hutson takes over PP1 and shows great success. Now that is a very strong possibility. The second is if Mailloux gets called up and takes over PP2 or at least shows that he is very capable of doing so. Then it would make Matheson expendable. At 50% retained I’d expect a big return; a 1st round pick and a former 1st round pick prospect type of trade. That or a young player that a contender would be willing to part with for two legit shots at the Cup and it is worth the gamble for them.
