Not only that but we just pissed off a player we're counting on heavily for the future.
The whole way this was handled was extremely dumb.

This only helps Montreal now and in the future, it also helps Subban he proves he's worth the money and term and in two years or sooner he signs the big contract. Don't forget he's still a RFA in two years and he really only has a year and half on contract not twio full years.
If Subban continues to progress and becomes a man Montreal will reward him heavily...

This is / was a negotiation and both parties understand this!

1. I think we could've signed him longer team at a cheaper rate.
2. Whatever chance there was for a hometown discount is now long gone.

Uh... how does that work? If Subban is banking on developing into a top 10 defenseman in the league (as people are suggesting he should be paid), then why would he sign a cheaper long term deal?

The way I see it there were a few possible outcomes here:
Sign him short term huge dollars (PK wins, Management loses)
Sign him longterm, until well after he becomes UFA-elligable at what you consider a "cheaper rate" (Management wins, PK loses)
Sign him short term to a deal that's fair and not that high, with the contract ending right where he should statistically be in his offensive prime and thus can demand a heftier contract than he ever could as we speak (PK and management win some, both knowing that in two years, he'll either force the team's hand in being offered a massive contract or he'll simply bust and not be worth the money).

Hometown discounts are a thing of the past. Kid is a firecracker in his early '20s. I know a lot of older guys would wanna play for the honour of the hometown, but plenty of people (even me, for example) would definitely go where the money and the cups were.

The only bad blood is from the PK Subban fans on the internet who despise Bergevin for getting him to sign a contract that will free up money to help improve the Montreal Canadiens.

And why be pissed off because the Canadiens will now be able to get better talent on the team............along with Subban on the ice??????

Don't get me wrong, the cap space is great. More than that, I love that Subban will be back on the ice.

I don't love that it took negotiations a week into the season and a weekend of soul searching with the family, before Subban decided to take a contract that he knows dramatically underpays him, because he decided to stay with the Habs at all costs. To me, this shows a GM that played with fire and got lucky, this time. It shows a GM that either did a bad job evaluating Subban's talent, or just decided that the best way to approach negotiations with our top player was to take the riskiest approach.

I disagree with posters that say Subban will take advantage next negotiation. If anything, management now knows for sure that he'll take less to stay in Montreal. But I do think this whole process reflects poorly on Bergevin and his crew. When Galchenyuk and Gallagher become RFA's, I hope management doesn't try this stunt again.

Yeah really. Price and Pacioretty didn't get special treatment, why should he?

Subban left money on the table to potentially make more in the future. Bergevin didn't know what he had, so he insisted on a bridge contract.

Do we really know what we have? Yeah, he's talented, but it's easy to look good with the ****ing scrubs he's played with the last two seasons.

About sums it up for me. We are lucky too that I think PK really wants to be a Hab, and the kid wants to play. I think hell show us what hes capable of, especially under a guy like MT and yes we will pay when his contract is up but so what, he will get paid what hes worth, really worth, over 6 years or so. Visions of Chelios, Roy ( I know, PK is neither at this point ) danced in my nightmares. I have liked MB up to this point, and still do,but I think he pushed too hard here.

Waiting two years allows Montreal to afford to pay him that IF he's worth it at that point.

Gionta's 5 mil will be off the books that alone allows Montreal to shell out for Subban.
MArkov will be up for renewal but could take less terma nd money or Montreal trades him for young assets as the likes of Ellis Tinoprdi and Beaulieu should be ready
