HF Habs: Montreal Canadiens Hockey Ops - Part 3

Marty sees hockey in a very Pep Guardiola way. His main challenge will be going from a developmental approach to a results based approach.

I'm assuming he feels once developed the results will naturally follow.

Either way I appreciate the type of hockey this organization ultimately wants to play. It's much better than the boring outdated slog we've been indoctrinated with for decades.

And yet Buffalo is also regressing despite bringing in a coach with 27 years of NHL head coaching experience. Maybe experience isn't all that it's cracked up to be.
When you trade players because you want to control their medical care you are both a bad human being and a bad GM.

When you draft players, put them on a bad team, wait a year or two, and then trade them for not fixing the team and they go make a good team better your organization is dysfunctional.

It’s tough getting out of the basement. Alot of teams stay there a while. Some, like the pens, stay there until they get generational players. Some just stay there.

It’s why Hughes shouldn’t be panicking or trading picks and prospects to win now.

You mean that dude with the hardest match ups.
He's making very smart line changes this season without cheating.
I jokingly referred to David Desharnais' penchant for getting off the ice a few games ago but Nick definitely does it properly.

I think Lars Eller must have a -20 in his career explained by getting on the ice in the middle of a 2 on 1 where DD was getting back on bench instead of backchecking hard it was so frustrating to watch.

I agree 100% with you, but it seems that most pundits here, if they had their wishes come true in Dach’s case for example would be causing the exact thing that has happened in Buffalo.

Don't know if it's available online somewhere, or if it's posted elsewhere here but it was interesting to hear Gorton answering reporters questions yesterday after the Barron/Carrier trade.

He mentioned how they wanted to add some experience to the blueline and someone right handed. He said there were several people in the organization who provided info on Carrier. One takeaway for me was Gorton saying they are very careful about who they add into the dressing room. Didn't catch all of the questions, would have been interested to hear a question about the goaltending.

Interesting debate between Bergevin and Hughes acquired pieces...

Suzuki vs Demidov
Caufield vs Hutson
???? vs Slaf
???? vs Laine
Romanov vs Dach
Evans vs Newhook
Guhle vs Reinbacher
Xhekaj vs Matheson
Anderson vs Heineman
Beck vs Kapanen
Dobes vs Fowler
Roy vs Hage
Tuch vs Xhekaj
Mailoux vs Engstrom
Struble vs BK

We are at a tipping point where the Hughes acquired pieces are starting to provide the same or more value than the core Bergevin left us with.

Interesting context into this looming $100M salary cap after that Rantanen trade.

There are going to be a lot of team (even contenders) that do not want to spend a $100M cap because the revenue they bring in is not enough. Look at where the Avs are in revenue from last year (snap shot below). They are $100M below the top teams.

When I look at this, I see the Knights with a massive tax advantage and they are a top 10 team generating revenue. Stars are another. You might say the Habs will have some advantage because we will spend $100M but we are the highest taxed city in the NHL as well.

thx for that. Crazy to see Edmonton at the top, but that's a McDavid phenomenon and won't last when he's gone

Kent Hughes went at the Processus podcast. I could watch it since I took the Patreon membership for 1 month and it was very interesting ! The episode will be out on every platform next week. One thing he said, is if they didn’t traded for Alex Newhook, they would have pick Gavin Brindley and Jacob Fowler with those picks but the scouts where confident they could get Fowler in the 3rd round

Here is a video of a part of the interview on what he said to Slaf this year

Good thing we traded for Newhook even if i don’t like him.

Don’t have a need for another 5ft9 top6 player like Brindley.

Well that tidbit is pretty interesting. Can't say I agree with Kent -- not giving Slaf instruction and throwing him in the deep end in the NHL "to ensure he doesn't dominate physically" is borderline negligent to do to a rookie and look what happened, he ate hits, got rocked multiple times, and got a major knee injury that was quietly covered up.

Itay be that there was nobody good at 31st overall.

But there may have been other trade options with the pick.

For example trade the pick for a future 1st rounder.

That's because of their finals appearance.

Sunrise is such a dead market. Closest to dire poverty neighborhoods in West Fort Lauderdale. Bottom 10 revenues even though they won the cup. No surprise they weren't condemned by the league for having such horrible ice in June.
