Never understood the need for this title. It actually bothers me when Leafs nation pushes this. Are Habs Canada's team now? Sure.

Makes no sense considering theres 7 Canadian teams.

Media is pushing this like its the olympics.

And pushing aspects of the olympics like they're newly discovered truths.

In all sincerity, cannot wait for the UFC to accommodate the strong, sincere feelings of some into the octagon against trained men.

And before hockey completely excises fighting from the sport, I hope similar people make it onto clubs as fourth line, gritty (because you know, you HAVE to confirm certain feelings lest cancellation) role players and the likes of Wayne Simmonds obliging said feelings, respectfully.

Just read this choker on sportsnet

Why Canadiens have taken on role of 'Canada's team' for the first time - Sportsnet.ca

Outside of maybe poulin and a couple others does anybody honestly think that the Montreal canadiens are Canada’s team…personally it made me want to puke as I’m sure most fans out west would feel similarly same as in Ottawa…but sure why not

Canadian hockey fans by and large are tribal by nature which means our team or no team…let’s be honest here
Disagree? Hit me with it
Habs have most of Quebec, half northern Ontario and more than half of NB and a sprinkling elsewhere .. when you add up numbers maybe 30-35% of Canada .. whereas our Leafs closer to 50% of Canada which is why Sportsnet numbers have dropped once Leafs out

This season, the title is more appropriate because of the North Division.

In a normal season, I don't think any team really assumes the title of "Canada's Team". The only 2 teams that could come close to justifying that title are of course the Leafs and Habs, based on their following from coast to coast.

Lol this is a silly take, but probably one I held when I was young. The reality of the situation is the Leafs have not held a true rivalry with the Habs for decades. I'd argue that Ottawa has been a bigger rivalry to the Leafs in the 2000s. Certainly Boston. There's nothing wrong with even a diehard Leafs fan to still be a diehard fan and choose to support Montreal when the Leafs are eliminated, over an American city from Florida. Lets act grown for a second here!

I'm 42 and "act grown" in almost all walks of life on a daily basis. I'd like to think people who know me consider me a kind, compassionate, and reasonable person. But...

...when it comes to pro sports, I reserve the right to be biased, irrational, bitter, and spiteful. It's the outlet for my basest tribalist impulses to see the world as "us vs. them." And nobody is more "them" than Montreal!

It's obviously better for hockey to see a city that is in love with hockey win the Stanley Cup, over a city that has already won it just last year and where the fraction of people actually caring about hockey is probably the fraction that are Canadian transplants. If I had to choose between the two cities and regions, obv Montreal deserves a Cup over Tampa Bay..

I'm old enough to have watched the Leafs win the Cup. More than once.

My dad and I had a healthy rivalry - he grew up out west when there were no teams there so people generally cheered for one or the other of the two Canadian teams. He was a Habs fan.

So now some 50 years later I have no problem switching to cheer on the Habs as the sole Canadian team left standing. I would have WAY preferred the Leafs but they turned out to be the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked. Again. ...sigh...

So this is just a media gimmick to try to pump up viewership and self-interest.

Maybe but likely a lot of viewers switched over to US broadcast too .. who knows as there numbers are up in Canada .. maybe these guys at Sportsnet need to take a good look at their broadcast and ask themselves why people are tuning out .. da intermissions are terrible now .. and da call is boring .. but bottom line is could be same sh*t with Leafs in it and they would have all time best numbers even with these goofs like Healy who might as well marry Carry .. what a homer

If the Leafs could ever make it to the finals ratings would be through the roof. Leaf fans/Leaf fans of old who had given up + every other Canadian hockey fan hate watching. Praying the Leafs fail spectacularly, viewship only drops once it becomes obvious Leafs are hoisting the cup.

Habs in a deep hole. Not over yet though

But where's Hughson?

I noticed it's been Cuthbert calling the games for awhile now

Did they finally ship Jimmy the hell outta there?

This whole "Canada's Team" narrative is so stupid and it's clearly a marketing gimmick to try and keep Canadian eyes on the playoffs after their teams have been eliminated. I can't believe people buy into this nonsense. Lmao

Well hopefully it’s over in two days. Still embarrassed over the leafs but thankful that Montreal didn’t go all the way.

Tampa is so far ahead of us it’s actually insane to think about it

After last year's "Kapanen scores!!!" he's done with Leafs games...someone higher up must have made a decision.

Cuthbert was always the successor to Cole.

Until that got screwed up somehow and he ended up going over to TSN for some reason

But thankfully someone at SN or CBC knew that Chris was the best #1 guy out there and did what they had to do to get him back. Now everything seems right back to normal with him as the play by play guy for HNIC. That job is rightfully his and has been for many many years. The broadcasts just seem 'right' with him calling them now

Bye Jim... no one will even notice you're gone haha

This cheer for your rival cause same country mentality only exists in canada.

In England, if you're a Liverpool or Leeds fan, you absolutely do not cheer for Man United to win the champion's league because they're the only english club left.

Instead you would sooner hope some other club defeats them.

Cuthbert signed with TSN in 2004 after he was released from his contract during a long CBC strike.

Hughson skipped out on the 2021 playoffs because he didn't want to travel during Covid. He'll be back (unfortunately).

Its not over until the cup is raised.

But yeah, they are way ahead of us. They have 3 top pairing defenders in Hedman, Mcdonagh and Sergachev and 3 other top 4 caliber D.

Its helped them significantly that they are in a tax free state, but what helped them the most was their draft selections outside of round 1. Kucherov, Cirelli, Palat, Point, Killorn, etc.

While they are doomed to lose some guys this summer they still got Cal Foote, Katchouk and Raddysh to lean on as replacements. Pretty, pretty, pretty good.

We have had virtually no successful picks outside of round 1 for many years.

It is a mind numbing narrative that the media has been pushing for as long as I can remember to try and keep fans of other teams watching the playoffs after their teams are out. It is incredibly transparent and some people take the line year after year.
