Just read this choker on sportsnet

Why Canadiens have taken on role of 'Canada's team' for the first time - Sportsnet.ca

Outside of maybe poulin and a couple others does anybody honestly think that the Montreal canadiens are Canada’s team…personally it made me want to puke as I’m sure most fans out west would feel similarly same as in Ottawa…but sure why not

Canadian hockey fans by and large are tribal by nature which means our team or no team…let’s be honest here
Disagree? Hit me with it

Any Canadian team thats made the finals during this drought tries to take the role of Canadas team. Not including the Jets (started 2011) they've actually all made it since 2000 now, except 1 team...

If we did, you'd be hearing that from this side too. Nothing new to see here.

Agree to disagree I’d rather see the cup go south than to Montreal
Oh, don't get me wrong, I totally agree. I'm cheering for Tampa because of an ongoing bet I've had since 2016, if Montreal wins I have to be a Montreal fan for 1 year.:help:

That said, Montreal has certainly earned the bragging rights for now. We choked the 1st round again, but they are in the finals and it's hard to take that away from them.

Seven Canadian teams to (soon to be) twenty-five American teams. It at least makes for a good enough talking point. It's not exactly 1984-1990, but...

This whole Canadas Team nonsense is so soft.... Canadas team wears the Maple Leaf at the Olympics. Point blank.

If the scabs do happen to luck their way into a Cup this year, they wont be parading down Yonge Street, or Granville St, they will celebrate only in Montreal on whatever their main street is. Because its the MONTREAL Canadiens.

Media and other soft fans need to stop with this whole LeTs gO cAnADa shit. It's sickening and honestly embarrassing.

I even hate it when its Raptors and Jays being called Canadas team. But at least it actually makes sense there, them being the literal only options and all.

I guess TB is American Team.

The media needs to calm down with ‘They are the Canadian Team’ and Canadians should cheer for them bc they are from a Canada’s City.

It doesn’t matter where the team is from, if they play good hockey, people will watch and cheer.

I guess the medias and even fans(this time Habs fans), might not like it that when the Raptors or Jays made the playoffs or even win a Championships, almost everyone in Canada seem to drink the Canadian team kool aid and watch the games or even buy merchandises while you can’t say the same about Hockey teams. For example, I don’t think anyone of my friends would be buying Habs tees or hats even if they win the Cup but pretty much everyone did during the Jays run and Raptors Championships, even though none of them can name more than 5 players on the team and some don’t even know how to play baseball.

The Canadian hockey media tries to do this every time. Remember the Canucks run 10 years ago? CBC and TSN tried to get fans to jump on that bandwagon, but everyone outside of Nucks fans despised them. Vancouver media types either whined about no one liking them or said "we hate you all too" haha, it made the Bruins the lesser of two evils. Something similar might happen now- not that the Habs are as despised as that Canucks team, but the Canadian hockey media pandering to Montreal may just turn fans from other teams off.

agree fully, well the sickening and embarrasing part is a bit strong lol

canada's team is team canada. everything else is just local, unless you only have 1 team representing the country in said league.

aren't we down already so much. why do we need to be kicked when down even more... ahhh.. of course Leafs!

As far as I am concerned there is only ONE team that is Canada's team -> TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

F everyone else

I want to see a team from Canada win. The NHL has neglected Canada for the most part and they continue to go in that direction for the big TV deals. Bettman will screw over a Canadian team if he has to in the process. So yeah, FU Bettman and go Habs.

Also no need to be sour grapes because our own team is the New York Knicks of the NHL.

Manchester United.
New York Yankees.
L.A lakers
Real Madrid

These are the top brands in the world. Leafs were never a top 10 brand in the world (No NHL team has) but they were a top brand in the NHL and in North America very popular and even known in some regions globally.

Popularity of this team is in decline. Immigrants follow Raptors. Leafs fan base is turning on them. Salary cap rules doesn’t help.

Leafs are now 3rd or 4th in the country behind Montreal, Raptors and Jays.

I don’t think people truly comprehend how much of a hit this brand has taken over the last 10 years of failure and other factors.

"Follow the money as they say".

I have my Vegas money riding on the Tampa Bay Lightning this year.

Montreal losing is an open and shut case for me.

Montreal Canadiens bettors close to hitting Stanley Cup jackpot

The Montreal Canadiens were long shots to win the Stanley Cup at the start of the playoffs, and that's putting it kindly.

Sportsbooks had the Canadiens' odds anywhere from +2,000 to +5,000, depending on when the wagers were made. They finished fourth in their own division and had the 18th-best record in the NHL this season. They were +240 in their first-round series against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Now, they're just four wins away from hoisting the Stanley Cup, and the true believers who wagered on a Montreal championship run are looking at quite a windfall -- whether they cash the ticket or hedge their bet by selling it for a considerable profit.

This whole run of theirs would've killed me if it happened 3-4 years ago, but I've learned to like all Canadian teams (Leafs and Jets are just my favourites).

Go Habs go!!!

Yea, to me club teams have no nationality. Yes, of corse they play IN a country, but there no relation other than physical location. I have no natioanl pride towards any of the Canadian teams. I cheer for 1 team, happens to be the Leafs who happen to be in Canada.

Is Tampa America's team? No? Didn't think so. If you are truly a Leafs fan and are cheering for the Habs to win, I question how much of a Leafs fan you are! Maybe you are new to the game... I am not generally a black and white type personality, but when it comes to this I 100% am... its either blue or red... can'be be both (for me). That being said, cheer for who you want, no one can tell someone else what to think or be.

But this 'Canada's' team bit is lame and is media driven... for some unknown reason.

The whole idea of "Canada's team" is just media spin.

Most Canadian hockey fans tend to be pretty tribal and hate the other teams in this country

Yeah, there’s no pan-Canadianism here. I’m not going to enjoy some cup win in Montreal.

Montreal has won 10 Stanley Cups between now and Leafs last win in 1967, and will be going for the 25th Cup in a little over 100 years= 1/4 of the Cups handed out throughout NHL history have gone to Montreal.

I'm not cheering for that regardless where their home base is.

Canada's team. It's an easy get. Problem is it's not true. When Vancouver went to the Final, don't know if like marketing was tried but I know a number of us became Kings fans the night they beat the Canucks.

Think about the circumstances by which The North Division is created. Under duress. Let's leave it at that. Under complete, generational, duress. And now, never mind your loyalties, never mind distinction, a team once built in no small part on territorial rights in a province sustained by incessant cultural identity concession under pain of threatened secession is being advertised as "Canada's Team" because they made it out of the C-19 North Division...

All aspects of this compelled new normal can hold hands and jump straight up it's own ass.
