I met him once on a plane flying from DC to Boston - mid afternoon flight that was largely empty. This was back when he was not playing trying to rehab the leg/knee.

I went back and asked him to sign a USA today newspaper for my wife. As I mentioned, flight was empty so while he signed I just plonked down in the aisle seat opposite him. We ended up talking for about 40 minutes and he easily asked me as much about what I did as I did him about hockey. We walked off the plane together and out the airport before I peeled off into a Hudson News just to give him a graceful exit.

Just one experience and has nothing to do with his abilities as an executive ... but from my experience at least a very nice guy - a smart guy - and someone who lived up to how I'd hope a sports hero to be than any other player I've ever met.

And to be fair -- the story about him sitting at a bar with a friend and some rando fan comes up to talk to them???? I'd give him some brief polite talk, sign an autograph, and if he didn't have the tact to then bugger off I'd suggest he do so. Remember the scene in one of the Hangover movies when Alan hires Mike Tyson to sing at the wedding? "We only have him for the night, we don't own him permanently".
Thank you!

Interesting.

Perhaps Montgomery felt like he'd been saddled with a lousy roster and did not want to be left holding the bag.

Now he's got a chance to maybe do some TV and catch on elsewhere.
I get the feeling it was more about family than not wanting to be the scapegoat. Him on TV would be great. He is a true x's and O's type of guy. Won't be shocked if he gets a new gig or if he decides to step away.

In regards to the contract extension Monty turned down: @neelynugs had mentioned a few weeks ago he had heard a rumor that Monty's wife wanted to go back to St Louis.

You don’t think Felger has any idea what happened? Hard to believe the host of a top ranked show has no clue.

No, I do not. I think there are posters here who have more information than Felger ever thought of having. In addition to that, even if Felger knew everything, he'd still sling bullshit because that's his shtick. He's a carnival barker, not a sportscaster.

I have no idea where he gets his information. It’s his job to get ratings and entertain for four hours per day. I usually listen for a while each day and enjoy it.

Can I personally thank his wife if that's true? Guy should have been canned a few years ago after that historical playoff round choke job with that roster.

He was a boring personality behind the beach that never stood up for his team being screwed over time and time again by bad officiating.

Just stood there and took it, Im sure his players appreciated that.

Good riddance Jim best of luck

That's interesting. Honestly, these guys are a close knit bunch and lots of talk today about going forward with guys who want to be here and love this team and this organization. I thought it was players talking about players, or them getting a message from Sweeney that if you don't play like you care you're not going to be here much longer... but it could also be a reaction to Monty not signing an extension.

You have to wonder if the players also were aware that Monty was having a contract disagreement (so to speak) with the Bruins and as such, especially after Swayman, this was creating a negative mood and situation.

My own view is that they held Monty responsible for blowing the Florida series when they were a record setting wagon and as such they weren't willing to reward him with the term and money he expected for his win/loss record. He wasn't going to get the big money without playoff success first.

The Swayman thing has more to do with this team's performance, but the lame duck status and divide may have contributed. We shall see soon enough if it was all psychological or if this roster is truly a bunch of stiffs.

It is probably a lot of different things to be honest. The Swayman stuff, training camp being a hot mess, Monty's contract and just life in the NHL. In the end, you just want to see them play the way they are capable of and block out all the other crap. They are lucky to still be in the playoffs right now and that there are 62 games left.

I'm still going to watch the team good or bad and I do expect changes this summer.
