Mo Rielly - "Our Norris Trophy Candidate"

Best leafs team in decades and all some leafs can talk about is getting rid of their best players.

It's amazing.
Well it’s projecting out the cap actually no..... We have a window where decisions need to be made every off season towards cap efficiency decisions.
That’s nothing ominous, it’s reality.

its a sickness.

It's a shame that they're not allowing Liljegren to play. His improvement is noticeable. I'd seriously like to see him get a shot on the PP over Reilly any day of the week.
Look at Holl’s progress because of the long view on development and enjoy. Liljigren will be just as important when they build him up slowly too.

It's not a matter of "getting rid of" players, it's just that we can't afford to keep everyone. We didn't "get rid of" Kapanen and Johnson, we just couldn't afford to keep them. Kerfoot is very likely the next one to go for those same cap reasons, I think he's a good player, would love to keep him but we jus can't afford to keep everyone and I'd like to keep Rielly and Hyman more.

It's not cap hell, like others have said it's just reality and if you don't think Dubas is thinking about these things then I'd say you're the one not tuned into reality.

the online fan base in a span of a month will go from giving Rielly the Norris to wanting him traded, just laugh it off ...

oh yeah for sure while we have the best team in decades we should really be talking about getting rid of our #1 dman who isn't a free agent until after next year and who we won't be getting rid of anyways.

reality.

I posted that Holl & Muzzy have as many even strength points as Rielly this season. It is just reality too

He is NOT our #1 dman .. reality ... right now he should be benched ... if not for Brodie he would have cost us 3 more last night

My post began with these words: It's not a matter of "getting rid of" players

Do you see it now?

It's like you don't even read the posts that you quote and then respond to, sheesh.

Note the capspace available at the top here, even after signing Hyman to a healthy contract, and stop worrying about having to get rid of good players:

I think Dermott would be worth a look on the power-play with Willy back there with him. Two good shots from the point one guy in front constantly and the corners move everything out higher. Rielly is a disaster on the powerplay. His decisions are slow and his shot is inaccurate and usually to high and to rushed. Never gets it through.

Dermott just doesn't have the offensive talent for the PP. He doesn't have the shot and he's not calm enough with the puck. Muzzin is the guy who we should try if we want to swap out from Rielly on the PP. He's got the cannon and he was on LA's 2nd PP unit pretty much his entire time there. Frankly, I'm surprised that Brodie has been our 2nd unit guy all year, he hasn't played much PP in Calgary in years.

Muzzy isn’t fast enough to wheel back on a muff up loose chip and break. Dermott flies he just needs reps to get that poise working the point.
To say he doesn’t have the shot without seeing some reps isn’t a fair shake. He does have a good shot actually. The poise part I couldn’t agree more. He needs to gain the confidence and calm to do that job. I’d like to see a look.

I see you "got rid of" a few players there and inserted some replacements (though you still don't have a full roster). And this right after chiding others for talking about doing the exact same thing.

You're funny.

I am funny, true.

But I didn't get rid of any core players, like you guys are so desperate to.

Here's what it looks like without getting rid of even Kerfoot:

Oh hey look at least someone here can be honest about the fact that yes, this is about "getting rid" of rielly.

Thank you, Waffles.
I’m down with moving him. I would want to see a very specific return that’s expansion draft exempt but yes I wouldn’t argue much if the return worked.

Edit: I am not in a hurry to dump Dermott to the degree other might be. To young and cap efficient and undeveloped yet.

If you're going to be making choices based on who can get back if a guy gets past them for a breakaway, it's Rielly or bust. Brodie and Dermott have wheels, but Rielly is in a class of his own for skating. I honestly cannot remember Dermott taking a slapshot, much less scoring on one. He's been in the NHL for almost 200 games, even if it's ES, he's had enough reps where we can evaluate his shot. He's got a wrister that's similar to Rielly's, aka not much of a direct threat. The only real reason to take Rielly off the PP imo is if you want the slapshot. Our PP runs through Marner anyways, the Dman is mostly just a bumper to pass it between Matthews and Marner if the lane is clogged. Rielly does that just fine. If our PP is going to start looking for a defenseman to jump into the slot, Rielly is the best at that, especially since he can get back in position if it goes the other way. If we're looking to have a defender hold the puck and QB more, Rielly is probably the best until Sandin is ready.

To understand my preference always, i always want tough defensive defensemen that do everything good and points are last consideration for me. I don’t prefer offensive dmen. It’s my last concern for defense.
