Usually they have to be enlisted at the high school to play. I believe they are a few exceptions.
Often times when a school no longer has enough players to ice their own program, they do sometimes combine programs with other nearby schools with the same problem. That is something parents need to drive the school into seeking though.

Thanx for the info everyone. Its kind of a crappy situation. We haven't moved in 15 years and my kid is has played for 3 different travelling associations due to low numbers in the programs, one year of varsity/JV last year and its looking grim for this season and next season at the varsity level.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what options kids have if their high school isn't able to field a varsity team this year? My kids team has had dwindling numbers over the last few years, and currently have about 25 kids total for varsity and JV right now. Next year is looking worse. Are we stuck playing Jr Gold or can we try out for a different HS team that is close to us? I've tried to find info in the MSHSL handbook, but I'm not seeing much pertaining to an issue like this.

I'm in WI, so the rules aren't completely the same. Here there are co-op teams for hockey. Like the 2 high schools in town make one boys high school hockey team. The girls team (a lot of the girls teams are like this) is made up from the entire county (or more), mostly 3 high schools, but there are one or two from 4 or 5 other schools depending on the year.

I don't know how good your kid is (mine isn't very good) but there are options like the USHL or NAHL, but that is a complete life change for everyone.

These high-school region's are B.S! Should be 4 non metro teams and 4 metro teams. Kinda like voting lol.
They're broken down to try to balance out quality. The rivalries are there up through sectionals, but you want as many of the best teams throughout for a better balanced state tournament, thus fewer dramatically lopsided games.

I haven't been following HS hockey as closely this season, but it kind of sounds like that Minnetonka should be heavy favorites this year.

I disagree. If we want to see the best on best in the Tournament, we shouldn't have them all in the same section.

Its a little strange having cities teams in section 7 and 8 and they do seed the state tourney. We have been expanding those sections for years, now they are 300 miles to drive from one end to the other.

Honestly, I don't believe enough teams up north even opt up to AA to allow for a full section tournament anyway.
Most of the old powers from decades ago in the north are in class A.
