I have a friend who is a fellow regular at B.U. hockey games, known him for about fifteen years, and he is a Newcastle supporter, a legit one, he's been to St. James a handful of times(he works for a bank and travels overseas regularly), along with other EPL grounds.
I got sucked into supporting Newcastle back in the mid-80s. Peter Beardsley was, and still is, my all time favorite player. Just as I got emotionally invested, they sold Chris Waddle, sold Beardsley and sold Gazza and then we were shit and I was at a low....until Keegan took charge.
Beardsley came back, and we bought Andy Cole and those 2 proceeded to tear up the Premiership in our first season back up ('93-94) and we finished 3rd in our promotion year and qualified for Europe.....and I was at a high. They're still the greatest strike pairing I ever saw......
I saw my first, and only live Newcastle match the following year. Europa League match in Antwerp. We smashed Royal Antwerp 5-0 and Rob Lee scored a hat trick. (I was high).
The following year, we blew an 11 pt lead and finished second to MANU (I was low, but defiant)
But because this is Newcastle, and we are not allowed to have nice things, we sold Andy Cole......and I was furious. (low)
But then we signed Alan Shearer and smashed MANU 5-0. (high)
Then Keegan quit, Shearer destroyed his ankle and we accidentally sold Les Ferdinand. (low).
Then we beat Barcelona 3-0 in the Champions League. Tino Asprilla had a hat trick. (high)
Then we hired Ruud Gullit as manager and he tried to destroy the team and benched Shearer. (low)
Then Gullit was fired, we hired Sir Bobby, beat Sheffield Wednesday 8-0 in his first match as manager (Shearer scored 5 that game) and we advanced out of the Champion's League group stage for the first time. (high)
Then Sir Bobby was sacked, and we endured years of shit managers. (low)
Then Alan Pardew took us back to Europe and we made it to the Europa semi final (high).
But we didn't invest in the club, the club was sold to Mike Ashley and we were relegated on 2 separate occasions. (lowest of the lows)
Ashley sold the club, Eddie Howe was brought in as manager and there's hope.....to be continued.
This is not a club for the faint of heart......
