If this Philles/DBacks game holds, the Mets are only .5 games out. Brewers would be tied with the Phillies at that point. This idea would have felt insane to say a week ago. Nats series feels like the one right after the TDL in 2015. Citi should be jumping on Friday night.

It's so congested in the WC standings that another nice stretch would almost entrench them in a spot. Of course beating the Nats would just group the top 5 WC contenders even closer.

The next 7 weeks are going to be the craziest race they've been in a long time.

Yup this is reminding me as well of the run to the WS we had in '15 and as I've said a few times, I'm old enough to remember vividly the run to the WS the Mets had in 1973.

I've said this as well, we really don't need to go off the next month. We just need to play around .500 or so during this tough stretch and we'll most certainly be right there till the end with as good a chance as any to be a WC.

If we do any better than .500 and maybe win 20 of these next 34 than it's gravy and depending upon how the Braves do, we might even start thinking about the division.

Who would have thunk it only 3 friggen weeks ago?...lol

McNeil and LeMahieu both leading their respective leagues in BA... the last time two players from teams in same city both won batting titles was 1942: Ted Williams (.356) and Ernie Lombardi with the Boston Braves (.330).

It has happened very quickly. Amazing really.
What isn't amazing is, how they actually have put themselves into this position......good and bad.
Brodie envisioned this club to be serious contenders. This is WHY he paid dearly to get Cano and Diaz. They were supposed to be the "icing on the cake". We all know what Cano hasn't done and is now useless the rest of the season.

Getting Diaz back to where he was is monumental to say the least. We could always use Lugo to close, but then who does Lugo's dirty work? Familia? Ha! Doubt it though, but maybe.
If Diaz gets it together, everything becomes easier. Honestly, we should never had been in this predicament to begin with.

Alonso has given much more than anyone could have hoped for and his defense has been a MAJOR surprise. He legitimately is good at 1st.

This team has galvanized itself, literally without the help of the Seattle twins. I dont want to settle for a W.C. Too chancy.
Lets catch them Braves, they ain't all that great, they have their warts and starting pitching isnt comparable to ours. We can catch them. Lets see.

A good reason not to have claimed/signed Panik is because he isn't any good. He's been very bad offensively 3 of the last 4 years. All he does is not strike out.

On paper sure it looks a bit daunting...no doubt this upcoming Mets schedule. 34 games vs good to great teams other than the Royals.

That said who other than Dodgers and the Braves do you actually fear playing or you think is actually better than us? I'm looking at this objectively as I can and I'm sorry but I don't see any teams that worry me other than LA and Atlanta.

I know I don't especially with the kind of pitching we have and how clutch the bats are. I'm telling you, if anything, if I'm those other teams I'm saying before playing the Mets... "damn...I don't want to be dealing with those Mets...they be nasty"....lol

In all seriousness, I don't think it's unreasonable for us to go around 19-15, 18-16 or even .500 or so during this 34 game stretch which will bring us to mid-September. If we do what I'm thinking we can realistically do, I have no doubt we'll be right there till the very very end for a WC spot, seeing all these other teams will be beating the hell of one another as well.

No matter how this turns out in the end run, I'm just so damn proud of this team. They came back from the dead and now they have lifted the spirits of every Met fan on the planet. This team has alot of heart and guts and now they are showing as well how talented as well and that's a hell of a combo....
Sounds a little familiar, didnt we say as much for the Ranger last season? Yeah man, I am with you. This Alonso kid (especially him, but amongst others) has really led the charge and given this team hope, inspiration and optimism. Adding Stroman (albeit he hasnt done anything yet) was an emotional uplift and not losing key components (Noah and Wheels) was huge.
They obviously believe in one another, and I am seeing they are "playing for one another". The look in Matz's eyes, the concentration, the exuberance in Alonso's finalization of a double play.....etc, etc. This will be fun, and already tired of the negativity. You are right, no one scares me against this staff.

Nothing would make me happier than an opportunity in knocking off those A holes in L.A. We owe them big time.
They have my 2nd baseman, I never wanted relinquished. Stupid Mets. Treated him like a red headed stepchild.

Remaining schedule

Mets - 29 home, 18 away
Braves - 24 home, 26 away
Nats - 25 home, 24 away
Phils - 21 home, 28 away

29 at home, where they're playing .615 ball this season (32-20) is nice
One of the best home records and looking to increase that. We have to be better on the road, and slowly getting there.

Yeah Panik isn't very good.

They have Tejada, Espinosa, and Herrera down in AAA. Tejada is probably the most "average" of the bunch--doesn't hit a lot, plays okay defense. He does have a 139 wRC+ in AAA. Espinosa is a horrible hitter, used to be a pretty good fielder. Herrera has the most upside with the bat, I would guess (22 HR in AAA), and is probably still average defensively. I would think either Tejada or Herrera would be fine to add to the 40-man and then bring up.

Next part of that is to drop an arm. It would be either Hart or Mazza. I'd much rather get rid of Mazza, but with Avilan and Wilson, you don't really need a third lefty in Hart. So Hart is probably the one to go. Or I suppose you could swap one of Hechavarria or Guillorme out if you want to stick with the eight-man pen, which is maybe a good idea. In that case I'd drop Hech, as Guillorme is better with the glove.

However they maneuver it, I think adding Tejada or Herrera has the potential to be just as good or better than Panik.

Quote above explains it. Panik makes $3.85M and would put them over the luxury tax. They'd only be over by a couple million and could theoretically get back under, but then they'd also have to concern themselves with getting back under next season. Not saying it should matter to them, but the Wilpons are not gonna pay any luxury tax money if it can be avoided.

And it shoukdn't matter. This is what kills me. A losers mentality. If Panik helps this club win, gets them at least a W.C. (if at home.....covers the cost easily, right?)
Theyre spending a fortune on a disabled Cano, so a measly amount to fill a void? Question is, is he that much better then Adeiny. Shouldnt be about the money. They just saved on Vargas

I mind less a player strikes out, just dont hit into those twin killings. Rally enders. Good in the clutch most times, but Ramos kills me, so known for that.

I'm not one to defend the Wilpon's, but it's tough to complain about their spending when they're walking around with a $200M+ bill and pushing right against the luxury tax. They may be cheap in the context of individual transactions, but I don't think they're cheap overall. They've sunk a lot of money into this roster. I mean, they gave the green light to the Cano deal, which was a huge money-sink.

Regardless, as stated, I don't even think Panik is much of an upgrade over things they already have.

Agreed. That was mostly my point. I would be okay with Hechy there. He is slumping, but give him steady playing time and he should be better than Panik. Just play a solid 2nd, turns DP well.
Problem is we should have trained Smith to play right, as J.D needs to be in every game, McNeil could have played 2nd.

Joe Panik has been worth -0.1 WAR via FG and -0.5 via BR over the last two years. He is a bad player and we don't need him.

Tough to fault the Mets on Turner. No one, I mean literally no one, saw that kind of progression coming. Even LA only gave him a minors deal when they initially signed him. I'm glad it worked out for him and all, but I can't really feel any frustration over losing him.

but with Avilan and Wilson, you don't really need a third lefty in Hart. So Hart is probably the one to go.

Having a somewhat quality lefty is something this team lacked when both Avilan and Wilson were out. Also, both of those guys aren't lefty only guys and they are currently slated as late inning guys. Hart gives them someone that can get a lefty out in the 5th or 6th if their starter isn't cutting it. I'd like to keep him around because when the team had no lefties in the pen, it went completely off the rails.

Mazza could go, even if he is the "long man" by default. If they really want to replace him, Lockett could come up if they need someone. We're also just looking at 3 weeks until rosters expand. I think they could survive this stretch without someone like Mazza. If they need multiple innings for a blowout game, they could use Gsellman as that guy or just push Familia since he is still working on things.

Understand your logic. My concerns with Hart is that he's not even very good. 90 IP with a K/9 of 5.76 and an strand rate of 82%+, which is probably 10 points too high given the peripherals. Probably why his career xFIP is 4.86 and no one seems to want to keep him. Not saying we should give him away, but I just don't know if he's any good. I wouldn't want him in a high-leverage spot any more than Mazza.

All that said, like you mentioned, only a few weeks until rosters expand. No one would take Mazza so we're probably fine doing that.

The Turner thing mostly pisses me off cause they did it again with Daniel Murphy who had two MVP-caliber seasons with Washington.

I understand the Murphy one, because of what he did in the postseason. But for it to be really bad, you had to have felt that the postseason run portended an actual regular season breakout at age 31. He had always been a solid 2-3 WAR player, but then he goes to Washington and is a 4.5 and 5.5 WAR player. I honestly didn't think the stuff he did in the postseason was going to carryover into subsequent seasons, so I can't kill the Mets for not thinking so, either. I mean he hit 62 homers in 7 seasons with the Mets, then hits 54 in two-and-a-third with the Nats. His wRC+ from 2011-2015 was 126, 102, 106, 110, and 109. With Washington it was 154 and 135 his two full years there.

IDK. I would have liked to keep him, but even with that in mind I still never saw that kind of production coming.

I don't know about that. The Mets gave him a QO which he turned down but couldn't get anyone to pay what he was asking before taiing a lower salarywith the nats.
