This just popped into my head, but how awesome were the Yankees 1990 amateur and regular drafts?
Rivera was signed by the Yankees organization in 1990 as an amateur free agent in Panama.. The greatest closer ever, 5X WS champion, 13X All Star, All time Saves leader.
Posada was drafted in the 24th round... 5 X WS champion, 5X All Star
Pettitte was drafted in the 22nd round of the 1990 draft. 5X WS champ, 3X all star, winningest pitcher in Playoff history.
If you think about it, in baseball you hope one of your draft picks pan out, The Yankees had 3 all stars, one being the greatest of all time at his position.
Shane Spencer and Ricky Ledee were also drafted, who were good role players. and Ledee turned into David Justice.
Incredible
And yet, you want to continue throwing money at players.
The Yankees are entering purgatory right now. The type of situation the Rangers found themselves in time and time again in the late 90's/early 00's -- not good enough to make the playoffs, and not bad enough to get a good pick. In baseball, its even worse because 1st round picks are stripped if a team outside the bottom 10 starts signing tendered free agents.
The Yankees roster is absurdly old, and there are no ready prospects in the pipeline. The Yankees, of course, have too much pride to tear this Frankenstein roster down and start over....not willing to take their lumps for a couple of years. But in all honesty, the way this team is operating, they'll wind up in this type of purgatory for far, far longer if things dont change.
