Terrible contract but hey... at least your owners ****ing do something.

Ours sit back and refuse to the sell the team for some godforsaken reason.

Not only do they refuse to sell the team, but they're buddies with Selig so they won't get forced out like the McCourts. It's such garbage. If they got put on the market, there would be an all out bidding war for them. A smart, well-funded ownership group could turn the Mets into at least as much of a moneymaker as the Red Sox, if not the Yankees.

It's really a damn shame. The Mets are the 5th most valuable franchise in the MLB. There is absolutely no reason that they should be priced out of this many of free agents.

This is a huge market. With the foundation that Sandy has set, this should have been a year we filled out the roster by adding 2-3 big time free agents. A few years ago we would have gone out and signed Cano, retained Beltran, and still been able to get a few fillers like Chris Young and Stephen Drew.

This year. We're dumpster diving for the likes of Tyler Flowers... the White Sox backup catcher.

With all the laundered money from China floating around Flushing these days, its a wonder the Mets cant get a taste.

#Yankees close to signing Kelly Johnson to a 1-yr about $2.75-3M. Plan is to play a lot around diamond, potential 2b option if Cano leaves

Low average, but has some pop, not bad for a utility guy.

I like when the Yankees are throwing money around like confetti. Like it or not it's all we're ****in good at

John Heyman was on MLBN saying that Ellsbury has been the Yankees target all along (as far as OF goes) since the GM meetings last month, Beltran was a smoke screen.

Cano, Beltran, Kuroda and Tanaka are all still in play.

I have a feeling that these Yankee moves were spurred by the Red Sox World Series win. They never like to play second fiddle to their biggest rivals.

its never a "good" thing when the Sox win the WS.. but the aftermath could be good.. maybe it sent Hal over the edge.

Too much money. Too much money. Too much money.

I like Ellsbury. He's a gamer. Has some pop. Can cover ground. But can he stay healthy. He is 30 years old. Has had to deal with injuries. Boston fans may be pissed but I bet when they saw those figures they probably calmed down a bit. $153 million? Are you series Cashman? You try to play the innocent card, the 'we're the good guys' card with the media to gain leverage against Cano's camp and then you do this? $153 million??? Nice job giving Cano all the leverage he wants. Cano is a superior player to Ellsbury. If I'm Cano's camp I'm gathering up all the comparisons in stats to distinguish the value Cano has over Ellsbury. I just don't agree with this move.

I was ok with Beltran. I wanted Beltran. Switch hitter. I know he has battled injuries too. But shorter term and money. It came down to the speed of Ellsbury in the OF. Though 30 years of age, its still just that, 30 years of age and not 38. The Yankees saw an OF of Gardner-Ellsbury-Soriano left to right, so they saw the shot and they took it. I think they have to keep one of Ichiro or Wells. I prefer Ichiro. He offers a better dynamic and has been relatively healthy. Can still steal bases and offer solid defense.

I like the Kelly Johnson signing. The Yankees NEED pitching though. If Roberston is going to be the closer they need to solidify their 7th and 8th inning options. They NEED starting pitching. There's no way they feel their prospects are ready. Betances was ugly when he came in during September. A lot of velocity but he was tee'd off on.

Hopefully they can re-sign Cano. I think ARod gets his suspension reduced. Let's take a shot at the lineup:

SS-Jeter
CF-Ellsbury
2B-Cano
RF-Soriano
C-McCann
1B-Teixiera
DH-Ichiro/Wells
3B-Johnson
LF-Gardner

With A-Rod

SS-Jeter
CF-Ellsbury
2B-Cano
RF-Soriano
C-McCann
3B-A-Rod
1B-Teixiera
DH-Ichiro
LF-Gardner

Extras: Wells, Johnson, Romine/Cervelli (I know I'm missing people)

SP

CC
Nova
Kuroda (if re-signed)
Tanaka (if posted and yankees win)
Pineda
Betances

I don't see them sticking to their goal of $189 million. Their ratings were down, especially in attendance. They have still relatively brand spanking new ballpark, less than 5 years old and their attendance has been down. They are going to throw the goal out and hope there an even bigger ROI. I wouldn't be surprised if they still sign Beltran as the 4th OF and trade Ichiro and/or Wells after this deal Ellsbury got.

I can see Soriano DHing a lot. Gardner in LF, Ellsbury in CF and Ichiro in RF simply because of that arm.

Also say goodbye to Betances in a rotation. He was converted to full time reliever last season and did extremely well. Lowered his walks and increased his K rate. I think he makes a very good setup man for us.

With that velocity, relief is probably a better option for Betances. Tall and intimidating.

I'd like the yankees to kick the tires on Grant Balfour. Hell, they've kicked the tires on everyone else.

I agree Soriano will DH a significant amount. Beltran would've needed to DH more which would've put Soriano in the field more. Ichiro is healthy and can endure the field more than Soriano would've had to.

Any word on Youkilis being healthy? I know we have Johnson in the fold, I'd still like to see if Youk could play 3rd.

Youk is a free agent. No idea if he's healthy or not then again after last season I'd be surprised if they bring him back.

Loved Youk in pinstripes just to piss off Red Sox fans.

I doubt they bring him back as well.

And I doubt the yankees are anywhere close to done. Cano, Kuroda, Tanaka still out there. Other buy low SPs to take a chance on.

IA without an Arod suspension, I dont think 189 is even plausible anymore since Cashman wants to add 400 innings (Tanaka/Kuroda), and we are still very much wanting to bring Cano back.

I think had they signed Beltran instead, they had a chance at the 189. They had a dire need at catcher. McCann is one of the best free agent catchers thats been out there in awhile. Ellsbury's speed, defensive ability, and bat outweighed the money and past injury problems. I also think with Jeter potentially retiring in the coming years, Ellsbury is that likable role model the franchise can market to help cope with the loss of Jeter's stature with the organization and its fans. I believe that definitely played a factor, whether big or small, in their decision.

Ellsbury is an ideal replacement for Jeter batting in the 2 spot, as well as a fantastic lead off batter. I'd keep Gardner in the leadoff spot because his OBP is higher and Ellsbury puts the ball into play as well as anyone. Gardner gets on base and Ellsbury is likely to advance him. The short porch in left at YS is going to be Jacoby's new best friend.

Also, an outfield defense of Gardner/Ellsbury/Ichiro/Soriano might be the best in the league. Speed everywhere that should save some runs over the course of the year.

The money is crazy but it's not mine to spend. 22 a year for 7 years isn't ideal (5 years at 18 would be a steal) but it's not that insane of an overpayment if Ellsbury can stay healthy. That's a big if but I have some faith considering his injuries were freak accidents. If you resign Cano, the Yankees lineup is back to being the best in the league, though dominated by lefthanded bats.
