Too much money. Too much money. Too much money.
I like Ellsbury. He's a gamer. Has some pop. Can cover ground. But can he stay healthy. He is 30 years old. Has had to deal with injuries. Boston fans may be pissed but I bet when they saw those figures they probably calmed down a bit. $153 million? Are you series Cashman? You try to play the innocent card, the 'we're the good guys' card with the media to gain leverage against Cano's camp and then you do this? $153 million??? Nice job giving Cano all the leverage he wants. Cano is a superior player to Ellsbury. If I'm Cano's camp I'm gathering up all the comparisons in stats to distinguish the value Cano has over Ellsbury. I just don't agree with this move.
I was ok with Beltran. I wanted Beltran. Switch hitter. I know he has battled injuries too. But shorter term and money. It came down to the speed of Ellsbury in the OF. Though 30 years of age, its still just that, 30 years of age and not 38. The Yankees saw an OF of Gardner-Ellsbury-Soriano left to right, so they saw the shot and they took it. I think they have to keep one of Ichiro or Wells. I prefer Ichiro. He offers a better dynamic and has been relatively healthy. Can still steal bases and offer solid defense.
I like the Kelly Johnson signing. The Yankees NEED pitching though. If Roberston is going to be the closer they need to solidify their 7th and 8th inning options. They NEED starting pitching. There's no way they feel their prospects are ready. Betances was ugly when he came in during September. A lot of velocity but he was tee'd off on.
Hopefully they can re-sign Cano. I think ARod gets his suspension reduced. Let's take a shot at the lineup:
SS-Jeter
CF-Ellsbury
2B-Cano
RF-Soriano
C-McCann
1B-Teixiera
DH-Ichiro/Wells
3B-Johnson
LF-Gardner
With A-Rod
SS-Jeter
CF-Ellsbury
2B-Cano
RF-Soriano
C-McCann
3B-A-Rod
1B-Teixiera
DH-Ichiro
LF-Gardner
Extras: Wells, Johnson, Romine/Cervelli (I know I'm missing people)
SP
CC
Nova
Kuroda (if re-signed)
Tanaka (if posted and yankees win)
Pineda
Betances
I don't see them sticking to their goal of $189 million. Their ratings were down, especially in attendance. They have still relatively brand spanking new ballpark, less than 5 years old and their attendance has been down. They are going to throw the goal out and hope there an even bigger ROI. I wouldn't be surprised if they still sign Beltran as the 4th OF and trade Ichiro and/or Wells after this deal Ellsbury got.
