You've decided what they got is scraps. The piece we do know is a kid who isn't even 20. This is not a journeyman minor leaguer (a al Chris Carter). It's a kid who addresses an organizational shallow position and has upside.

We don't know who the PTNL is.

Oh, and they could very well sign Byrd this winter.

Lets be real with the PTBNL, thats never going to be any kind of good prospect. I heard a term this year that GMs have for "prospects" that they know won't ever be major leaguers. "Organizational Players" they call them. Thats what the PTBNL will be.

"Some international prospects come to the United States and are, at least initially, overwhelmed. Not so for Herrera, who made his U.S. debut in 2012 and was among the Gulf Coast League leaders in a host of offensive categories. While he's not the biggest guy in the world, he's shown he can really hit and projects to be an above-average hitter in the future, with more power than you'd expect from a guy his size. A well-above-average runner, the Colombian infielder should be able steal bases consistently, and that speed should also help him with his range as he continues to get used to playing second base, having shifted from playing third in the Dominican Summer League in 2011 after signing."

He started the season as the Pirates #20 prospect. He was their #11 prospect.

You never know. David Ortiz was picked up on waivers.

But you conveniently ignored my points about what we do know the Mets are getting.

Neither of us know anything about the player we are getting, But considering we got him on August 27th in a waiver trade, I highly doubt he is anything noteworthy.

If that's the case, there's no reason to deal Byrd. The fact is this is a kid, not a career minor leaguer. So there's upside.

Brilliant trade by Sandy. Byrd is the man, but he's not going to be here/ be good when the team as a whole should be good. John Buck has been awful since his uber hot first month of the season.

Herrera is a good prospect and he's just 19 (or did he turn 20 this year?). Either way, great trade, and goes to show Sandy knows what he's doing.

The next month should be dedicated to improving our draft position and seeing if we can win some games on the backs of our young talent- Lagares, Flores, Wheeler, Niese, Ike(?).

Herrera doesn't turn 20 until March.

Do you actually think that Byrd will be able to repeat the production he had this year, next season?

I think that them Mets did the right thing and sold high on Byrd. They got the Pirates' 11th best prospect. The youngest or second youngest player to ever be named to the MLB Futures game, and frankly a kid with some good upside.

Will he ever reach his full potential? I have no clue.

Funny enough, but the Mets made another trade for a second baseman on August 27th. It was Jeff Kent. Jeff Kent was older by 4 years, and was in his rookie season, but if you go back to his low a stats as a 21 year old, they look similar if not worse than Herrera who is playing low a ball at 2 years younger of age.

Bottom line, is that Sandy got the best prospect he did for a player, that likely was having a career best season, and a player that is not in the long term future of the Mets.

Great job Sandy. Another wise trade.

The kid will bounce back. Lackey was a fat useless turd, got fatter, got TJS, and is now having a great season at 33.

Mets fans should have tempered expectations a bit. I remember the Pulse-Izzy-Wilson era that lasted six months, and they were supposed to be the next Glavine-Avery-Smoltz.

Young pitchers go through a lot of ups and downs until they become consistently dominant. While Harvey has four + pitches, MLB hitters would have eventually adapted and forced him to change his game, just like hitters did to Seaver and Pedro and Maddux.

What's funny is that the Mets were supposed to contend with guys like Pulse and Wilson, but it ended up being scrap heap guys like Mark Clark, Rick Reed and Bobby Jones who stabilized their rotation during the late 90s.

I think the Mets are still 3 or 4 years away.

Herrera is a really good prospect, way better than the usual waiver trade fodder. He was expendable because of the Pirates freakishly deep system and, moreso, dire need of a third outfielder.

Herrera, if he continues to develop, could be a starter in the Majors. Good speed for a second baseman, decent glove, decent bat. The only real downside with him is that he is so far away and, as such, is all ceiling and no floor right now. His size basically mandated a shift to second (from third) before making it to America and his arm isn't strong enough to play short.

I had him penciled in as the Pirates' second baseman of the future.

How anybody can overreact to this trade is beyond annoying. Almost didn't wanna finish reading the thread. Both teams made out here. It's a great deal for both sides.

Someone I work with randomly asked me this question a month ago. Now with Harvey being injured, I thought of it again. I floated it around with my friends, both Met and other team fans, and the answers were pretty split down the middle.

The odds of this actually happened are about 0, so lets not even argue that.

Met fans, and if you aren't a Met fan you can answer as if you were...Before the injury to Harvey...Straight up, would you trade Harvey for Trout?

I'd do that in a heartbeat. I'll take an elite player playing everyday over an elite player playing once every 5 games 11 times out of 10.

As units, your pitching staff is generally more important than your position players. As individuals, not so much.

I agree, I take Trout too. I had Met fans, and even a Yankee fan, argue on the behalf of Harvey/pitching.

Which I am not saying is wrong. Just thought it was a good question and wanted to see what some of you guys thought.

No. Pitching wins you Championships.

Some people are irrational in baseball too. :)

For about five weeks of Byrd and Buck, the Mets get a very solid second-base prospect in Herrera. Playing full-time at age 19 in the low Class A Sally League, Herrera has shown somewhat surprising pop, with a .156 isolated power and 41 extra-base hits in 109 games. He's got a simple, quiet approach, just loading his hands a little higher than he should, with adequate hip rotation for 15-20 homer power at his peak.

He's an above-average runner whose speed hasn't translated into baserunning value, and is presently a fringy defender at second but should develop into an above-average glove given time and instruction. I'd call him a future everyday second baseman, a solid regular with a chance to be an above-average one.

I'm told by multiple sources that the Mets will receive another player to be named who is a "solid" piece, enough to make this deal even better for New York. Given how little sense there seemed to be in retaining Byrd at the July trade deadline, this is a very positive result for Mets fans after this week's other less fortunate news.

Wow, rumor is the PTBNL is Vic Black. 16th ranked PIT prospect.

He looks to be a pretty solid reliever. In AAA to so he could be on the Mets next year. that's good because we need immediate relief help who is cheap, so we can sign a couple players including a starting pitcher or two now.

Just curious but where have you heard/read this rumor?
