I think I heard O'Neal or someone say something along the lines of "highly unlikely that Willie Mitchell returns this season" in the post game. Any one else catch that?

Caught that. Rosen will maybe follow up soon.

Why do you guys think Mitchell's career is done? He's still participating in team events and is around the team. Maybe they want to shut him down this season and have him get back to 100%, where he could possibly join the team in the playoffs, who knows. Look at how Gagne's return caught us by surprise last year. Me thinks some of you are being a bit over dramatic saying his career is done.

He said it during one of the in-game segments for sure. "Extremely unlikely" was the phrase he used. :(

i was think about this last night. what happens to him after this season? compliance buyout?

I don't believe technically they're required to buy him out because he was injured during the lockout. In fact, I don't think they are currently required to pay him.

So how does that work with the cap for the next two years? If he doesn't play that is.

well according to reports hes been medically cleared to play, right? from my understanding it is his choice not to play because he doesnt 'feel' ready. how would DL get away with not paying him if thats the case? i dont really know how the buyouts work or what the rules are with keeping a player on the LTIR even though technically he can play.

i have a bad feeling about all this

Since he is chosing not to play the team could suspend him, same as not reporting. The fact that the team has not shows they are willing to work wirh him in the hope that he will come back.

This is the same situation as with Vancouver. Willy disappeared completely from the organization while he was recovering from his concussion. He's very diligent about making sure he doesnt rush himself into coming back and giving in to any pressure and then re-injuring himself. I think he'll be back to play, just not this season. It's really up to DL whether he's willing to wait and we saw what happened to Vancouver with him.

I would assume they just put him on LTIR, like the Flyers did with Pronger.

This only comes into play if you reach the cap ceiling. His hit goes to LTIR when we get to the max. Until then, he counts against the cap.

Why, I don't really know as he then doesn't count when we reach the maximum, but that's how they do it.

Lombardi chimes in with the following:

Lombardi, on Willie Mitchell:

“I’d say it’s a very long shot…There’s always ‘maybe’, but I think we’re convinced now he’s not going to play this year. Now, if he comes back, then it’s clearly a bonus.â€

I wish that they'd buy him out and have him join the either the coaching or scouting staff...

Meh. The Canuck fans were saying the same thing and then he helped us win the Stanley Cup. He is only signed for another year, would be a waste of a buyout and only prolong things. Might as well keep him as an ace we might be able to pull out later.

Buy out Willie? Holy **** some of you guys really like to give up quickly don't you? Do you remember that one time we won a cup with him being a rock defensively the entire year? No? Well it happened. I think he'll be back next year making you all regret ever questioning if he should have retired or not.

Yeah all this retirement talk is jumping to some drastic and dramatic conclusions. And as someone else already mentioned, can't buyout an injured player. They can place him on LTIR and gain some cap relief in the meantime if need be.

In that interview posted on KV at the White House, Willie didn't look like a guy who wasn't going to play hockey anymore to me. He will be back next year and hopefully will give the Kings a cheap year after that. If he has a bad wheel and feels like playing this year is going to get him hurt worse, I'm okay with that.
